Meet Yoli Mayor of Yoli Mayor Music

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yoli Mayor.

Yoli, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been singing since I was two years old, as my mother tells it, or as long as I can possibly remember. My parents owned an auto shop in Little Havana where I would often sing to customers as they waited for their car to be ready. Art has always been an outlet for me, whether it was making jewelry on my bed for hours or putting on talent shows in my living room, I’ve had a love affair with artistry my whole life.

When I got to high school, I drowned myself in music theater, theater, dance, and choir. I think I am one of the few people who says “I really enjoyed high school”- I got to truly explore my creativity 24/7. I wrote and directed screenplays, was acting-costume designer, lead choir rehearsals, all while maintaining my grades. Though I had the chance to be very artistic, it was also one of the most difficult times in my life as I dealt with bullying and self-esteem issues. I experienced personal crises that further burdened me as I tried to fight through the societal norms of what a ‘leading lady’ is supposed to look like. I had to learn how to move past it all in order to continue to express myself artistically; a path that lead to opportunities in music and eventually live performances.

My first paid show was a Valentine’s performance when I was 17 yrs old at a Yacht Club and it was exhilarating for me. I knew then that performing live was what I wanted to do professionally and every step I’ve taken has further progressed that goal. I have been able to work a few residencies in places all over Miami for the last three years, generating an organic fanbase in my own hometown. In 2017 I auditioned for America’s Got Talent 12th season and concluded my run as a semi-finalist, which was such an amazing experience itself. I am honored to have had such incredible opportunities such as performing for the charity foundation Operation Smile in LA and Camillus House based here in Miami, to singing the National Anthem in a sold-out Hardrock Stadium for the 2017 Orange Bowl.

Thankful for all I have been through, I look forward to channeling my experiences into my own music as I work on my debut EP album. I learned long ago that the key to happiness is balance and self-love. I learned to ignore the things that didn’t serve me and to absorb the things that would help me grow. I live my life as the unadulterated me. No one else’s opinion is more important than my art or my happiness. As I often say “LiveYOLIfe.”

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The main things I have struggled with throughout my life have been; self-doubt, my weight, and learning that someone else’s opinion of me does not need to be my reality.

I have been denied certain roles or opportunities because I didn’t “look” the part. It has taken a lot of pep talks in the mirror, but I finally understood that I had worth and something beautiful to offer this world. My desire is to inspire others to overcome these irrelevant standards and show people that there is worth in everyone, no matter how you look.

Beauty and creativity are such personal things; I had to learn that everything is beautiful to someone. I had to learn to stop comparing myself to other people. I was where I needed to be in that moment and it was as simple as that. My creativity and my beauty weren’t up to anyone else.. at the end of the day the only person who needed to love my art and love me, was me. As a young woman, it is hard to see that when we live in a world so often run by other people’s opinions.

Please tell us about Yoli Mayor Music.
I am part of the entertainment industry. We provide the music that fills people’s soul. Everything from corporate events to weddings, fundraisers and working with non-profits- we specialize in creating a unique live performance of music. The styles range from standards to jazz, R&B and some pop. Best known for reinterpreting hit songs, I also include various of my original pieces whenever possible.

I am proud to be part of the local Miami scene and represent Miami wherever we go. I love getting to connect with people through my voice. The thing that keeps us going that keeps us connected is that we love what we do. Every show becomes an original piece of art that we get to share with the audience.

I am also known for “powerhouse vocals” and encompassing a wide spectrum of emotion throughout the shows. I love to make people feel something. When you tap into feelings you never really know what will come out. Some may cry. Some may laugh. Some may jump up and dance around the room. It’s unpredictable; it’s real. I appreciate realness in the artists that I admire most, and I hope to be known for being real to my audiences.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I wouldn’t have wasted so much time being afraid. I would have danced more. I would have laughed more. I wouldn’t have been so serious. I would have trusted myself and hit the ground running!
