Today we’d like to introduce you to Yoelvis Hernandez Leiva and Dayana Fernandez Molina
Yoelvis, Dayana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Our project, BEZEL, began in Cuba, about 2011, as a small family initiative. Little by little we were reaching recognition as creators and we got to participate in local handicraft fairs like the Art Fair in La Rampa or the craft fair Arte for Mama, both of Havana; And even in an international fair, International Fair of Crafts, FIART 2013.
From the beginning we named BEZEL, referring to glass and its forms, details, techniques, and versatility. When we arrived here in 2014, we gradually sought to take our first steps to resume our project here, on a large scale. We kept our name, BEZEL, and started walking.
We are fundamentally dedicated to the customization of custom glass, on different supports: glasses, jars, fountains; But also on glass doors, windows, building panels, etc. We customize all the glass supports that our customers want, both residential customers and other companies, always taking into account our mechanisms and current work capacity, which is gradually on the rise.
We are currently working on other ways of working the art of glass, such as stained glass, vitromosaics and painting on glass, as well as creating an online store where we can offer models developed by default, for anyone who wants to acquire the Product already customized.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, the road has not been easy. And many factors have made it more difficult to develop our project on a large scale. For example, the consequences of the migration process. Immigrating to a new country, in addition to giving us countless freedoms and possibilities, especially to us Cubans, implies a drastic change in our lives, which has demanded a greater effort on our part to be able to carry out our project. The possibilities are endless, but above all for beginnings, financial support is always necessary, which we do not really have, and at least for the type of project we develop, a space is needed to work. For the moment, we develop our project from our house, until we are able to allocate a space for the business. It has also been very difficult to know and understand the legal and financial mechanisms to develop our project here, often supported and advised by friends and acquaintances with a little more experience than ours in this turn of business. New systems, new laws, new ways of understanding and operating the market.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
What were you like growing up?
Since childhood, both of us were very curious and above all very creative. Personalities that we explored over time.
Yoelvis studied sculpture at the Academy of Art in Cuba, and then set design at the University of Arts in Havana, ISA; Although it is the part with a more entrepreneurial impetus of the project. Dayana studied graphic design at the Superior Institute of Design of Cuba, ISDI, and then Bachelor in Art History at the University of Havana, Cuba.
