Today we’d like to introduce you to Yisel Babastro.
Yisel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a Cuban girl who came to the United States six years ago. I was studying Dentistry back in Cuba but when I had the opportunity to come here, I didn’t think twice. I was lucky to come here with my family because we have been pushing through together and if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have accomplished many of my goals. Makeup hasn’t always been my passion because I didn’t know how to do it. I’ve been playing here and there since 2016 but nothing serious.
I learned from watching many professional makeup artists on YouTube and picking up what actually works in real life. I’ve done some makeup on girlfriends for their photoshoots and they really loved it. That made me really happy. My path is not to be a professional makeup artist but to be a Pediatric Doctor. I recently finished my Bachelor’s in Science at Florida International University and I’m studying in order to get into Medical School. However, since I love doing makeup, it’s going to be my part-time job. I do believe that anyone can do an excellent job at makeup or at any other activity if time and passion is dedicated to it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path hasn’t always been smooth but when it has was thanks to my family’s support.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a freelance makeup artist. For me quality is always over quantity, meaning that what I do is never about the money, in fact, I’ve never charged a dollar for my work until now. My proud moments come when my clients are extremely satisfied with my work. That’s my biggest reward.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was in Cuba when my parents could gather money after a long time to get me a pink bicycle. I remember I was over the moon with the surprise and I learned to ride the same day after many bruises. Yes, I’ve never given up on anything.
