Today we’d like to introduce you to Yanyn “Yany” San Luis.
At just 29 years old, an MBA degree, a 12-year successful career in corporate coaching, and a bright future most women her age only dream of… Yany still wonders why she didn’t take risks sooner, failed faster and accomplished a little more by now.
Yeah… I know right!!!
Born and raised in Miami by her mother Erenia San Luis, and her grandmother, Justa Acosta; Yany was all too familiar with the no retreat – no surrender immigrant mindset.
She attended Miami Dade College where she breezed through an AA in Political Science followed by her bachelor’s degree and then MBA from Florida International University. (BA ’10, MBA ’16)
Though not ready to start a family yet, fiancé Milton David Vazquez and Yanyn have been going steady for five years now, so we shouldn’t be surprised when the news break! But for now, she comes home to Apollo, her 5-year-old mixed Terrier, a name she got from the Rocky Balboa series, “I’m a big fan of Apollo Creed and underdog stories, so when naming my next dog I wanted to pay homage to him”, adds Yany.
Yany’s mind is made up of a few things, one of them is about being resilient in life. “You have to learn to bounce back quickly”, she says. “Growing up, with an alcoholic Father was difficult and brought about desperate moments for both my mom and me, but we decided early on to not let that situation define us. My mother is not only an amazing person but has been my biggest inspiration since I can remember.”
When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Yanyn said she wished she had taken more risks sooner and would’ve asked for help more often. “I think had I done those 2 things more often it would’ve cut 2-4 years of my learning curve!”
For most people fear can be a paralyzing factor in their lives, but for Yanyn it’s nothing but rocket fuel!
Fear has been and continues to be her primary driver and motivator to crushing it!
“The fear to fail, to let my family down, to be labeled by life’s setbacks, and to not be good enough… these are the demons I face every day, but they push me hard and keep me positive, focused and at the moment. I know it sounds weird, but it works for me!”, says Yanyn.
Yanyn currently lives right off 14th and Ponce de Leon in Coral Gables. “I absolutely love the Gables, for its canopy trees, walkable streets for dogs and local restaurants… it’s so easy to get everywhere!”
Looks like Coral Gables is going to be her home for a while!
Yanyn’s daily mantra is: Be the best version of you everyday and ask yourself how can I beat the “me” from yesterday.
At the core of that mission lies her passion to help other women earn a seat at the table, to ask for what they want, step up to their purpose and ultimately create more wins not only for themselves but for those they touch in their journey!
“That’s, in essence, the mission of The Win Woman™ and it’s pretty much what I want to do for the rest of my life. I feel I can relate because in many ways I’m a living breathing example of the struggles, pains and fears, and wants and aspirations that modern women face today, so I feel I can relate to my audience and vice versa!. We’re women that want to change the world in our own little way.” She added.
Mentoring other women on how to negotiate is an essential part of her program. She believes that a negotiation is an art form that is not limited to business -in fact, she teaches how negotiation is part of everyday life and debunks the myth that negotiation is about one person losing and one person winning, but instead you must aim to create mutually equitable outcomes where everyone walks away happy with their deal.
When asked what she feels is the greatest barrier to entry for women to get to where they want to go, her answer is totally contrarian…
“There’s a BIG FAT POPULAR LIE out there, which in essence pits women against the world, this is a dangerous limiting belief for all women… the real danger lies in how we see ourselves, our self-doubt, low self-esteem, and the constant validation-seeking mindset over decisions we’ve made in the past. When you are a Win Woman™ these thoughts don’t enter your mind.”
“I work, mentor and learn from kindred spirits, weird women, game changers that don’t feel entitled, or that the world owes them something –The rainmakers, the Spartan women, the crazy ones… these are the women that will change the world. These are the women that will make a dent in the Universe.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I live and stand by my mantra which is “How am I going to beat the “me” of yesterday?”. It’s a mantra of self-improvement and trying to always look back at what can be done better. The first obstacle is I faced in starting this business is “where do I start?”. I look at my part in this world as “what problem can I solve?” In the case of my business, I was tired of women not knowing their worth and therefore not asking for the things they wanted. Whether the “things” they wanted were personal like owning a home, getting their partner to help out more or professional as in asking for more money; women weren’t asking for it. I loved to debate, argue and negotiate all my life, so I wanted to bring those skills into getting women to create their own wins, and belong to themselves.
The challenge when I started was all about trying to solve this HUGE problem and not get overwhelmed by all the work that is needed to accomplish. The key is to tackle it bite by bite.
Please tell us about The Win Woman.
I am out to build badassery and create more badass women. I do this by coaching women to close deals, increase their worth, and ultimately win more by learning the skills of marketing yourself and mastering sales and negotiation.
I’m most proud of the women I’ve impacted through workshops and one on one coaching that have taken away a new perspective of how to negotiate and more importantly, know after they’ve come to a seminar how to own their own strengths.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Definitely start earlier! I know I’m 29 years old, however, I’ve had this idea of impacting women since I was a teenager. I think we get bogged down by waiting for this “magical” age of being accomplished or that we need to take the traditional route of getting your degree, getting a real job, and then after you’ve paid your dues and established “street cred” or a ton of experience that’s when you can go off on your own.
That’s not the case! You can work on a business the minute you have the idea, and you can take it step by step. It’s easy to doubt yourself or listen to the naysayers who think its too “risky” to go out on your own. What happens here is that you get caught up in the traditional route and think there’s only one route to operating a successful business. There’s not! Create your own route!
