Today we’d like to introduce you to Yadah Yadah.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Back in 2011, I moved to Miami as a publicist and when everything got slow for me and my car ended up breaking down, I always knew that I had a fallback plan. I’ve been doing hair since I was 11 and doing it professionally since 2009. This was always my side hustle if nothing else. I remember sitting in my apartment on Biscayne trying to figure out how I was going to get out of this financial hole. The idea that I came up with was to post 50 ads a day promoting my hairstyles on craigslist, Facebook, and any other free social site, print flyers (black&white copies) and post them on everyone’s door in my apartment complex, and everywhere I go pass out as many business cards as I could. Over the course of doing that consistently for months, my business started booming. I was working out of my apartment which eventually became a hassle because it was uncomfortable giving 100’s of people my home address. I worked from home for about a year until I finally started working in salons. The first two salons I worked at, the owners treated me like trash, so I quit one and got fired from the other. It really put a bad taste in my mouth because I’m a very friendly person and poor treatment is a no no for me.
The very last salon that I worked at welcomed me in and gave me the platform to do what I do best and that was to socialize, slay, and get my clients out at record-breaking time. I loved being there but I had goals that needed to be accomplished. I worked at that location for one year and then I spread my wings and opened up a small suite where I could do my client’s hair in a plush intimate space. The suite is where my vision got clear and I started to see what I was really capable of. I built an even bigger clientele base and I realized that all of the clients that I built from my apartment, the salons, and the suite followed me and they literally referred their whole family to me. I would listen to my clients and potential client’s concerns day in and day out about how much they enjoyed to be in a calm, friendly environment with time management so I said say less. I went on this quest to find the perfect storefront because It was now time to create opportunities for other people and it was also my time to see if I was capable of being in this position as a salon owner. After a year at my suite, I finally found Truth Hair Studio Mia. Truth Hair Studio is going on six years in business and with the salon came our hair products that are officially in stores and along with the products, I became an author of my very first book called “The Big Energy Agenda Book”.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely NOT! The hardest thing about being a salon owner and also being a college drop out is the lack of business knowledge that I had. I educated myself through trial and error, tons of books, articles, conferences and never quitting. I was 25 when I first got the salon and I am 31 years old now, the younger boss didn’t know what she was doing and the Yadah today is finally getting her ducks in a row. I learned so much about leadership, respect, finances, and keeping up with my books over the course of these five years. I’ve almost lost my business, time and time again, but I never lose my faith. Another obstacle is finding a staff that you can build trust in and will trust me as well, and I finally think I have that.
