Meet Wilma Francis Ellis of Perfection of Beauty Hair Gallery in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilma Francis Ellis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Wilma. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hair has always been my passion since I can remember. At the age of 15, I started doing hair at my home in Dania Beach. I was known as the $25 girl because all of my hairstyles were priced as such. During this time, weaves (especially microwave ponytails) were becoming increasingly popular so that was my main clientele. I wanted to elevate in the hair game so I enrolled in cosmetology school in 2003. All Dolled Academy is where I learned to cut, style and color. Mrs. Bailey was such an inspiration to me, taking me under her wing, teaching me all of the techniques and business mannerisms. I graduated from the Academy in 2005 where I stayed at All Dolled Up Salon working as a commissioner. From there, I worked at two other salons as a booth renter and in 2009, I opened up my own salon. The Capricorn in me is always seeking perfection. Thus, the creation of Perfection of Beauty Hair Gallery (POB for short). Also, in God’s eyes, we are all perfect despite our differences and I truly stand behind that. My vision was to create an atmosphere where you can be serviced with the best products on the market, professional stylists in a clean modern environment. Thanks to God, my husband, sister Lakisha and team my vision quickly became a reality. Once I opened my salon, the clientele became predominantly short cuts. My cutting/razoring techniques earned me the nickname “the short cut killer.” Nine years later, I am still catering to all styling needs while specializing in short cuts. Since 2017, I have learned to apply and style lace wigs and perform individualized hair replacement. I make sure to keep myself educated on the latest trends in hair by attending classes and workshops.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest part of this journey for me is being patient. My first salon landed me in a lot of turmoil. I was extremely anxious about becoming a business owner I did not thoroughly read the contract. My advice to all of those who are interested in owning their own business is to read their contracts, get a lawyer if need be, and plan/process all of your decisions. Even as a mother of three, I don’t find it difficult to balance being a mother and businesswoman. I love my family beyond words. They push me to become a better version of the person I was yesterday.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Perfection of Beauty Hair Gallery story. Tell us more about the business.
My styling capabilities range from short hair to long hair, weaves, relaxed and natural. Promotion of healthy hair is my company’s main goal. I advocate for the utilization of various treatments, oils, and styling tools to ensure the client’s hair is optimally healthy (strong, shiny, and maintained). Short cut styles are my specialty. Waves, curls, spikes, pixie cuts, shaved sides, designs, I do it all. I love clients who allow me to freestyle. Allowing me to let my creativity flow usually produces some of my best work. I am most proud of being able to tailor a cut to a client’s face. I can do an identical style and cut on two clients and it will look completely different. I am also known for my coloring. I use special colors that are vegan, vibrant, and gentle on hair. My work has been featured on clients in Cosmopolitan Magazine and The Cut Life Instagram page.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
By the grace of God, I plan to open a chain of salons and a hair replacement center in the near future. I want to onboard a few more stylists, nail technicians, lash technicians, and estheticians. I am currently searching for talent to curate and give a home. My calling is also for educating. I would love to host master classes or a mini beauty academy.
