Meet Wei Sheen of Back In Harmony Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Davie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wei Sheen.

Wei Sheen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a pretty active kid growing up in Australia. I played a lot of different competitive sports including soccer, softball, volleyball, cross country, and athletics. Like most kids, I also carried a heavy school bag, often on one shoulder because hey, it was cool, and all the other kids were doing it. All these activities, plus walking to and from school with the heavy bag resulted in pain in my neck and shoulders, numbness and tingling in my arms, back pain that went down my leg, knee pain and headaches. All kinds of symptoms I never expected a teenager would have. The school did their general screening and told me I might have scoliosis and to get checked by the doctor. Medical doctors would then tell me my aches and pains were just ‘growing pains’ and to stop playing sports and that I’d eventually grow out of it.

After months, my mom came across an ad in the newspaper for chiropractic and wanted to take me to see this chiropractor. I had never heard of chiropractic before and honestly, wasn’t too interested but was willing to try it and was so glad I did.

Little did I know, this was the beginning of what would become the turning point in my life.

It did take several visits before I started to feel better but the changes were astounding. Through chiropractic adjustments, I was pain-free, headache-free, had more energy and felt great! While it was confirmed that I did have scoliosis, it didn’t stop me from playing any sports. In fact, getting adjusted helped me run faster and play harder without injury because my body’s biomechanics and nervous system were functioning the way it should.

I was fortunate enough to meet my chiropractor in my final years of high school. He saw me looking at one of the x-rays in his room one day and after asking him questions about it, he pulled me aside and told me I would make a great chiropractor and to consider studying chiropractic after I finished school. He planted that seed in my head and every few visits would talk to me about chiropractic and I would observe him with patients. After having experienced firsthand how profoundly chiropractic helped me, without the use of drugs or surgery, I realized that this was exactly what I wanted to do for others. He inspired me enough to completely change course in my career path from Information Technology and Multimedia to Chiropractic. There’s been no looking back since!

After I graduated, I worked as a locum for a chiropractor in Malaysia, covering two clinics while he was away. Following that, I was offered a job by a chiropractor in Florida. I worked in Pinecrest then in South Beach over a two and a half year period before making the decision to step out on my own. I wanted to utilize all the techniques I had learned as well as expand my knowledge to include acupuncture and have since become Certified in Acupuncture and am also a Facial Movement Taping Level 2 Rocktape Provider.

It’s been amazing to see patients bring in their partners, their parents, and their kids. We’ve been very blessed.

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
That’s a good question. Most of where I got to was sheer hard work and determination. I put a lot of hours to get to where I am today. I guess I was lucky to have met my chiropractor when I did. Had he not pulled me aside that day, I wouldn’t be here, halfway across the world, doing an interview about my own chiropractic business.

I’ve also been lucky to have a great chiropractic assistant. We have good chemistry and I think it shows when you’re in our office. We love what we do and we truly have a good time helping people.
