Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie “Rockstarr Diva” Nelson.
Please kick things off for us with some background on the story.
We’ve heard the saying time and again that behind every great man, there’s an even greater woman. Well, this is literally the case for Flo Rida and the powerhouse team he has assembled which includes his Director of Social Media Director of eight years Valerie “Diva” Nelson.
Born in Bridgeton New Jersey, NJ from West Indian parents, Diva has always had a love for entertainment blogs, magazines, and music since the age of 15. She also noticed something in Hip Hop and the blogs were missing, the fact the women could work with and for each other. There was the Foxy Brown vs Lil Kim, Trina vs. JackiO and Nicki Minaj vs. Remy Ma, so “Diva” vowed to build a powerful network of positive and productive women, who are confident in their hustle and secure enough in their movement to support the goals and efforts of other women like themselves.
In 2016, Diva created the Glitz & Girlpower awards designed to celebrate women empowerment and achievements in all aspects of life. G&G has become the go-to platform for experimental marketing for many startups and mature organizations in the entertainment industry. Due to the vast network reach and impact in the entertainment industry, many celebrities choose this platform to support and leverage. G & G events include A list celebrities, key top sports figures, and top influential businessmen and women gathered together to celebrate some amazing women who continue to impact and empower through their platforms. The award show will leave you connected to women that will inspire and assist in making your dream become a reality.
Diva attests her strength and success to the loyalty and love that she has received from her family and friends. She looks forward to continuing her career with Flo Rida and her International Music Group Family, who is one of her biggest supporters in the growth of her women empowering platforms.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, reaching out to women that you’ve admired so much, some of them your whole life and getting rejected. Was discouraging. They would say things like “who is Glitz & Girlpower?” Never heard of it, not interested in getting recognized by a platform that isn’t as popular as Black girls Rock, Essence or BET Awards. It took a lot of strength to push through the disappointment of little or no response when reaching out to let them know about the honorary award recognition.
Next was funding, all I had was a vision and faith. God used people to help us with funding and put people in place to help us get the word out. We needed more people to know about the organization so we could receive more support financially and physically at the show.
Doing all of this and being a single mom didn’t make it any easier. But the motto has always been: stop at nothing to make your dreams become a reality. A message promoted every day from my media company Pretty Hustlaz, the inspiration used to birth the Glitz & Girlpower Network.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
