Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Morgan.
Teresa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up painting and drawing and sculpting. I went to art school in Denver in the 80’s but soon realized that I didnt want to work in an ad agency. I had been cutting hair since I was 12 because my grandfather was a barber and I watched him work and believed it ran in the family. LOL. So I left art school for cosmetology school and worked at the Borghese makeup counter at The Denver Dept store while going to school. After ten years of successful salon work and specializing in color correction I decided I wanted ocean life and moved to Miami Beach. It was 1990. Such a wildly artistic place. I partnered in a vintage store on Espanola way and installed a salon in the back. Those were wonderful times. Madonna, Patricia Field, RuPaul, Kenny Scharf were all patrons of the store and we have some great memories.
I first started my commercial work then with MTV which had an office and studio on Lincoln Road. Those were the 90’s. Fast forward. Over the years, I have worked with many celebrities and models and really interesting people. I am so grateful to be trusted in my skills of enhancing the way people look. I have worked on over 50 feature projects in film and television. I was just nominated for a Makeup and hairstylist Guild Award for a movie called “Patsy and Loretta”. I love making and creating wigs for movies and TV. I also love creating makeup special effects and have had many opportunities for that.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest struggle I would say is learning to budget yourself as a freelance artist. In the beginning, it was very hard and I had to really hustle to make ends meet. I am truly grateful for all the work that has come my way. Both from fellow artists that have helped me and my own perseverance.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I do makeup and hair for TV and film. In the last 8-10 years, I have been involved in creating many feature films. I especially love “period hair” because it is an amazing thing to recreate the past and I’m really good at it. I’m very grateful to be able to be creative in my job. It is so rewarding to create something that people really love. Instant gratification! I’m very easy going so I think that helps me to instill confidence in my work for others.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A good work ethic I think, is first and for most.
