Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Feinman and Megan Harris.
Stacy and Megan met at a Miami-based public relations agency and instantly clicked. As time went on, they realized they shared many of the same aspirations, including owning their own business one day. It wasn’t until months later over dinner, when they were talking about what it would be like to start their own company, that they decided it was time to put words into action. With a little hesitation (from Megan) and a lot of motivational quotes (from Stacy), two months later, they gave their employee notice — at the same time. Thankfully, they received an incredible amount of support, and The Tropical Agency was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every day of running a start-up brings its own set of challenges and learning experiences. Aside from general business-operating responsibilities such as bookkeeping, legal and developing processes (which can be really overwhelming!), the area we are most focused on is narrowing down our services and areas of expertise. On our first day at our new office, we met someone who asked what areas of media we worked in. We quickly listed off 20 different services to which his suggestion was that we needed to cut the list in half. As time goes on, we’ve been fine-tuning our areas of expertise and really digging into carving out our own niche. It’s a balancing act between pursuing our passions and paying our bills.
The Tropical Agency – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We like to say The Tropical Agency “brings sunshine to brands” by shining a light on businesses who are looking to find their voice amongst the competition. We do this by using a combination of social media content and management, press pitching and digital marketing. The great thing about being a team of two is that we are able to custom-tailor strategies for each client. As a start-up, we are most proud of our hustle and determination – especially in the level of attention we give all of our clients. We develop genuine relationships with everyone we work with and want our clients to see us as an extension of their own internal teams.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, Stacy was always very inquisitive, wanting to understand the reasons behind everything. One of her favorite games to play when she was little was to ask WHY to anything her mom would say. As she got older, Stacy’s curiosity turned into an eagerness for knowledge and she developed a drive to always figure things out. She always envisioned herself as an entrepreneur and dreamed of running her own company. After ten years of working on marketing teams, at PR agencies and launching startups, it all clicked: Stacy was going to incorporate all of the skills she learned in the past and create an agency that would help grow brands.
Megan always likes to say that as a kid, she would get in trouble for talking too much and now she gets to make a living doing it. Growing up in South Florida, Megan was actively involved in theater and would participate in community plays, including Alice in Wonderland (where she played the Mirror) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (she played the leading role of Charlie despite having auditioned for Veruca Salt). Megan took her love of performing with her to Florida State University, where she majored in Communications. After graduation, she found her way back to South Beach, where she has enjoyed a career working in television before co-founding The Tropical Agency.
