Sommer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Salon Mixx originated in 2011. However, the salon itself has been around 17 years. Prior to becoming owner and changing the name to Salon Mixx, I was a stylist here with zero intent on ever owning a salon. The previous owners, well, ran the salon to the ground.
Out of the 10 staff members, 3 remained. Including myself. One day, we received a phone call informing us that the salon was being shut down. Frantic, I made a decision and became owner literally over-night. I strived to create a creative and cozy space where everyone can feel at home. Salon Mixx caters to all ages and all genders. Fast forward 5 years, we now have a strong, talented team with the highest salon ratings in Davie!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
NO! Haha. There were many challenges. For example, the first 4-6 months we were basically working in a construction zone. I’d be applying someone’s color while there were construction men drilling in the back room. The hours were long, I remember working 2 weeks straight without a day off. We all went through a high turnover in the beginning. We came a long way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Salon Mixx story. Tell us more about the business.
Salon Mixx is best known for its aesthetic and high quality hair design. I think what makes us different than surrounding hair salons is we truly care about the integrity of the hair before anything else. We welcome the unexpected and are willing to try almost anything.
