Today we’d like to introduce you to Derik Fein.
Derik turned to music as a young child to combat the anxieties of growing up in a broken home. At 13, Derik’s musical roots were born when he traded his iPod for a broken guitar which he refurbished and self-taught himself to play.
Derik would sit and watch YouTube videos to teach himself songs as he couldn’t afford lessons. He began writing at an early age to as a way to escape the realities surrounding him.
Today, Derik has amassed a fan base all his own through his raw, edgy and storytelling way of singing, pushing the lyrical envelope evoking his thoughts on love, heartbreak, and regret. His music ranges from the acoustic pop fare, bathed in RnB and blues.
Derik continues to battle with anxiety today and knows that making music is one of the things that allow him to channel that stress & anxiety in a positive and meaningful way. Derik knows there are many people who struggle with anxiety and who’ve grown up in broken homes and creates music in hopes that others will connect with it and know that they aren’t alone.
Being an independent artist isn’t easy and Derik is hellbent on proving the naysayers wrong. With the support of his fiancé and often Ubering to pay for studio time, the release of his debut album feels like redemption.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey is miles away from smooth. I’ve dealt with people in the industry who have tried to take advantage of me because I was naive and eager to “make it.” Early on in my career, I dealt with a lot of loneliness and even homelessness. At times, I felt alone. If it wasn’t for the support of my sister and her wife and then later on my fiancé, I’m not sure I know where I would be today.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m Cuban American, a singer-songwriter from Miami, FL who makes songs for my fans and not the labels. I’m not interested in trends, I’m interested in sharing a message through my songs. I love, love and being in love and I write about that. I’m incredibly hands-on with every aspect of my career, from writing all of my records to co-producing every track I record. I co-founded a record label with my fiancé Vanessa Santos, to ensure that I have full control of the creative process and can be my most authentic self.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck has played a big role because a lot of it is luck. Aside from the hard work I’ve put in, luck plays a role by giving you the gift of meeting people in the right place and at the right time. I don’t ever like to associate negative events in my life with bad luck because life throws you curveballs so that you can learn and evolve as a person. If a door doesn’t open for you, you aren’t meant to walk that journey.
