Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Caravello.
Shannon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m originally from Suriname, born and raised. I moved to my neighboring country, Guyana and lived most of my teen years there.
I began photography at the young age of 16. I toyed around with photography for a little while and didn’t fully get serious about my craft until I realized that I was starting to make some money. I dropped out of journalism in college and set out to focus solely on photography.
I decided to move to South Florida in January of 2011 to pursue my photography career. I studied at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and graduated in 2016 with my Bachelor’s degree in photography. I worked hard, after that, networking, photographing, connecting with like-minded individuals, and I always felt that there was a place at the table for me to bring my craft to.
I’m now a proud owner of my very own photography company, De Haas Photo. My main focus at De Haas Photo is family, lifestyle, and newborns. I also photograph events, corporate portraits, weddings and dabble in fashion from time to time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
NO! It’s had its ups and downs. I’ve tried working for other companies, to get a feel of the corporate world. I left some, got fired from others because it wasn’t a great fit. There was something more than I craved and sought. It took me a few tries, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it then. However, I finally faced my fear and decided to leap into my craft wholeheartedly, no turning back, all or nothing type of stuff. I decided to invest in me, and what I know I was good at. I stopped trying to fit into other molds and decided to mold my own future.
I failed miserably in the beginning. I had no clue where to begin. But I pushed myself to network, join groups, reach out to others in my field. It felt intimidating at first, but the trick was to just leap. You’ll make errors, but you learn as you go!
Please tell us about De Haas Photo.
I specialize in newborn, maternity and family photography. I am most proud of my creative eye, and what it has become today. I know what makes others look good. I am also proud of my drive and I want to serve others. I think what sets me apart from others is my quality and my service. I go more than above and beyond for my clients, to always make sure they look and feel their best. It’s more than just about a client for me, they become part of my De Haas Photo family. They invite me to play a small part in capturing their journey, which in turn, makes them become a part of my journey. Full circle.
What role has luck had in your life and business?
I think it’s played a little role. What I believe in more than anything, is hard work, persistence, determination, and putting yourself out there to welcome the opportunity. I think luck goes hand in hand with the others.
