Meet Shanice Anderson of RxHair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanice Anderson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shanice. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a pharmacist, recently graduating in May 2020 from Howard University. During my time in pharmacy school, I realized I was spending too much time and effort trying to keep my natural hair moisturized and healthy. Afro textured hair (coily, kinky, curly) loses its water content fairly quickly, so I began to apply the knowledge I was gaining from earning my doctor of pharmacy degree to creating hair care products that had the ability to lock moisture in for an extended period of time. The products I created made it possible for me to go weeks without dry, crunchy hair, which gave me more time to focus on studying and graduating.

I started RxHair in my final year of school with two products; after earning my degree, I was able invest more time into RxHair and subsequently created more products to serve users from washing to styling. So now not only does RxHair offer products that lock in moisture, but also products that provide that moisture as well. This brand is growing and I’m so excited to see what’s next!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road! Running a business is hard! If anything goes wrong in the business, it falls back on you. It’s up to you as the business owner to think of creative, cost efficient ways to navigate obstacles that arise. There have been so many times where I questioned if this is what I should be pouring all of my energy and resources into, due to different hurdles that seemed too high to clear or growth in my business slowing.

The process of expanding my product line to include more products was so stressful, and I experienced quite a few delays and setbacks that were not only due to the difficult nature of building a brand, but could also be attributed to trying to do so in the midst of global pandemic COVID-19. Raw ingredients and containers were often delayed, and I experienced a huge mishap with my label vendor which caused my initial product launch to be pushed back, and even more heartbreaking– customers experiencing a slight delay in the receipt of their orders.

I have a true passion for natural haircare, I thoroughly enjoy it; however there are still so many moments where doubt and imposter syndrome creep in. There are times when I wonder if I am the right person to try to build a beauty brand or if I should just focus more on advancing in my pharmacy career. However, I also remember and truly believe that God would not provide me with this vision and passion, nor would he have brought me this far if He wasn’t going to provide me with whatever I need to advance. Even if my faith in myself waivers, my faith in God doesn’t, and I know that He works in all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

What sets RxHair apart from other haircare brands is that I have a deep understanding of the chemical structure and function of the body from my training as a pharmacist. Our products also don’t contain a lot of water, which most brands have sold to consumers as a necessity, when in fact its just cheaper for them. I don’t believe you should have to pay for water in your product when you have water that flows freely from your shower head. I minimize the use of water and instead pack RxHair products with ingredients that have shown their benefit for our hair.

I am most proud of being able to provide people who have struggled with moisture control and maintaining healthy hair the ability to do so for the first time in their natural hair journey.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am looking forward to growing RxHair and becoming a brand that is top of mind when you think of hair products. I am looking forward to learning more about growing a business, marketing it efficiently, and further incorporating entrepreneurship into my lifestyle.

My personal life is experiencing so many changes with starting a new career in pharmacy, getting married and growing this business, I’m looking forward to learning how to find a healthy balance between these aspects of life that are all so important and enjoyable in their own right.
