Meet Sarah Mitchell of LYG in Coral Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mitchell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When quarantine began in South Florida, my Grandmother from Peru was down visiting us. To cure our boredom, my mom ordered yarn to start teaching me how to crochet, and it soon became one of my main sources of entertainment while stuck at home. After making so many different designs, I thought to myself, maybe others would also like the things I made, and that began my small business Like Your Grandma (LYG). Since opening, we have been taking orders through depop and venmo, and have begun to grow our Instagram following. It’s really exciting to see the growth of LYG since June to Now and I hope to keep it going while I am back at college.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, things have been pretty good! I tend to stay on the more optimistic side of things for LYG because it is a passion project of mine and every time I sell an item or receive a photo from someone who has purchased from me, always fills me with joy. I will say balancing running a small business and my other responsibilities can sometimes get stressful but everyone who purchases is so kind about wait time and understands that this isn’t fast fashion and it cannot be shipped out in a day.

LYG – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
LYG is a crochet clothing and accessory company. Our best selling item is our crochet bucket hats with flowers. I’m proud that I have been able to bring a little joy into the buyers’ day whenever their package is delivered (especially given that we are in the middle of a pandemic.) I think what sets me apart from other businesses is that I love when people ask for a unique crochet design and after figuring out the best crochet design, am able to do it for them. It brings me joy that they came to me to ask for something new and that I can do it for them.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was honestly the day I realized I needed to make an excel sheet to keep up with orders. To me it legitimized what I was doing and made me feel as though I had the potential to make this something greater than just a small project during quarantine.
