Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kuehn.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve actually dreamt of being an artist since I was a little girl. My entire life, that’s the only thing I ever pictured myself being. As I got older, the realities of that dream started to feel more like a fantasy and I struggled to find my path. I experimented with so many different art forms over the years but nothing ever really stuck. Eventually, I basically gave up on my art and focused on building a career for myself. Then one day, literally out of the blue, I felt inspired to learn how to make jewelry. I bought a few books and dove right in and started to teach myself things after work and on the weekends.
Within a month I was completely obsessed and its all I could think about. When I first started making jewelry, I never thought it would turn into a career for me. I just did it because it made me happy and I seriously couldn’t stop. I had never felt this passionate about anything before, and that was incredibly exciting. After about a year of this, my business had grown to a point where I was now practically working two full-time jobs, and it was killing me. It was at this point that I realized I actually had a real shot at being a full-time artist and could be my own boss. It took me a little while to build up the courage to leave my career and work on my brand full-time, but it was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. I still can’t believe this is my life and feel incredibly grateful to have found my passion and path in life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
So far, my biggest obstacle is often myself! Learning how to let go of my fears and not let them hold me back is always a challenge. It’s very easy to become complacent & comfortable, but as a business owner, it’s extremely important to constantly evolve and change with the current. That’s not always an easy thing to do and is something I have to continually challenge myself on.
Please tell us about Alloyd Studio.
I make jewelry out of my studio in Boynton Beach, FL. Each piece starts off as a ball of wax, and I sculpt every single setting from scratch. My designs are then cast in either recycled bronze or sterling silver. One of my biggest loves is rare and unique gemstones! The stones are actually the heartbeat to my entire brand and is what sets me apart from other jewelers… If you love stones, then I’m your girl. One of my absolute favorite parts of the job is sourcing all of the new stones for upcoming collections. I love to make one of a kind designs using this one of a kind gems. The end result is often something truly special and unique.
What role has luck had in your life and business?
I’m not quite sure I believe in luck. Call me a romantic, but I like to believe in destiny or fate. For me, things have all worked out so seamlessly that I really does feel like fate. In life, I try to always goes with the current, no matter how uncomfortable or scary it may feel. When I live my life like that, things always seem to work out brilliantly. Thats how I’ve approached my business as well, and so far its been working out great. If the current is pushing me to the right, I go right. If it starts pushing me to the left, I go left.
