Salomon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After having spent a career owning and operating textile and plastics companies in Venezuela and Colombia, I came to the United States and saw an opportunity in the dry-cleaning business. I saw a big deficiency. It was missing CARING, about the garments, the customers, the environment, the workers, and the community. In 2000, I invited a team of experienced business executives, with whom I had worked in the past, and have the same believed in caring. Having the experience of implementing the ISO 9000 method in various industries, we began to identify efficient equipment, procedures, raw materials and auto-immunization techniques for dry cleaning, all of which would be non-toxic and environmentally friendly, thereby developing what was originally a unique boutique-style cleaning store into a novel business concept for the U.S. market. Our team’s industrial background and identification of the model as an innovative industry combined with the business acumen and understanding of the demanding U.S. market resulted in OXXO’s fast-growing venture.
We revolutionized the global dry-cleaning industry by creating a unique concept through acute analysis, base testing, and a first-class team of professionals. OXXO Care Cleaners ® is a non-traditional cleaning franchise. It is socially and environmentally responsible, and the first dry cleaning franchise that requires the use of GreenEarth solvents in all its stores, fully electric equipment, and most recently, the only franchise in the U.S. utilizing an ecological detergent containing a renewable active natural ingredient derived from palm oil. The agreement with Dersa; a main player in the laundry market in Colombia, and producer of TOP Terra ecological laundry detergent, was announced in May 2017.
I chose South Florida as the pilot region to launch because I felt that, unlike other states such as California and Colorado, there was a lack of environmental awareness in the region. The harmful effects that Perc and other chemicals bring to clothing and to human health are not an issue at OXXO Care Cleaners ®.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Throughout the years, OXXO Care Cleaners has been the leading brand in eco-friendly dry cleaning. However, the brand faced some painful situations that were dealt with successfully and left the company with among other things; a learning experience.
One of the obstacles was that one of the franchisees, who after being successful for seven years with his store; due to personal problems he abandoned the business and immediately, we bought the store from the assignee and took over the store operations. This plant is still operational and was able to positively recover from its collapse.
