Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Painter.
Sally, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up on a farm and co-owning a nursery for most of her life, Sally Painter has always been surrounded by the beauty of the natural world. So it’s really not surprising that she turned to nature for inspiration when she took up painting. The fascinating shapes, delicate textures, and vibrant colors of flowers and other plants and trees are her favorite subjects.
Yet, Sally says, she strives to paint something more than simply a realistic depiction of these subjects. She notes, “I interpret the subject with a brush in hand, allowing my imagination to select colors and forms.” Like one of her artistic heroes, Georgia O’Keeffe, Sally invites us to enter into her subjects, to experience them, to have a visceral reaction to them. Above all, Sally’s oil paintings allow us to see as she sees—what she describes as “God’s amazing way of creating each so uniquely and so beautifully.”
What began as a hobby has since become an important new chapter in her life, including the formal study of art and painting at the Boca Raton Museum Art School. “Painting is my therapy, my peaceful, creative place, and I treasure that,” says the artist.
In recent years, she has been profiled in American Art Collector, ARTisSpectrum, and Artist Showcase, and Southwest Art’s September 2015 edition named her one of their Nationally Emerging Artists. Sally has participated in a number of significant art competitions, including the Oil Painters of America 2016 Juried Salon Show, the 26th Annual All Florida Juried Arts Show (2016) the 2nd ART and FLOWERS Juried Exhibition (2016), the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society Spring Online Exhibition (2016), the 26th Annual Best of America Fine Art Exhibition (2017).
In addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, Sally has been juried in as a member of the following organizations:
• International Guild of Realism
• Oil Painters of America
• National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society
• American Women Artists
• Boca Raton Museum of Art Artists’ Guild
• Artists of Palm Beach County
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Art, as in life, always has its challenges. Perhaps the greatest hurdle is getting your name and brand out there, having it recognized by a broad group of people. I have been rejected many times but strive to learn from each. I try to improve my artwork while still staying true to my vision.
Sally Painter Fine Art – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My “business” is art – often considered a contradiction because they require two very different skill sets. Thankfully, in my earlier life, I owned a company and have the necessary business knowledge to navigate that element.
My product is artwork, specifically paintings. I specialize in florals and western images which are reflections of my lifestyle. I live in Delray Beach, Florida in the winter and Jackson Hole, Wyoming during the summer.
What sets me apart is the unique florals – I illuminate alternative perspectives, drawing you in with vibrant, powerful colors. The petals seem to breathe on the canvas, brought to life by my layering and careful choice of highlights. Much like Georgia O’Keefe, I reveal the fragility and living essence of everyday flora.
I am most proud of the fact that I have been juried into several prestigious art associations including the Oil Painters of America and National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. Additionally, Southwest Art Magazine selected me as one of 15 artists around the US as a “Nationally Emerging Artist”.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In my art career, I define success as expressing myself authentically on the canvas.
