Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabel Bezet.
Sabel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I would say good style is in my roots. Growing up, my mom would intentionally choose my outfits and she instilled in me an appreciation for quality style and clothes. I believe someone with good style naturally has a trademark. As a little girl, my trademark was easily my beige GAP hat.
Fast forward to today and I can’t say that my trademark has stayed the same. Needless to say, I grew out of my GAP hat. My style has become much more complex and while I don’t necessarily have one trademark, I create my own identity in the brands that I choose to wear. Brands say so much about a person’s style preferences. My mom would have to agree. This is part of the reason she launched Jackie in October of 2017.
I feel honored to be such an integral part of a company, a community really, like Jackie as the Head Buyer and Stylist. I admire and aspire to the same kind of values and goals that Jackie makes a priority to work towards.
I guess you could say I’m a real-life Elle Woods because my other passion is law. In high school, I was introduced to Mock Trial, a team of about ten chosen students who compete at state and national levels through a series of trials. This was my sport, to put it into perspective. I had rigorous practices each week. My goal was to win. I did this for three consecutive years and in 2016, I won the award for Top Attorney in the State of Florida. I know without a shadow of a doubt that part of my successes in my operation in the courtroom can be attributed to how I suited up. In other words, what I took out of my closet and put on for the day had a direct impact on my confidence and ability to communicate effectively.
The feeling of that achievement was just too good to leave in High School. I went on to compete at the collegiate level with the intention of attending Law School.
I am a senior at the University of Tampa and plan to attend Law School in the fall of 2020. I don’t care if every attorney I’ve ever talked to has told me not to go or that I will regret it. I like a challenge.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not. There have definitely been challenges, but as a member of the Jackie community, what would it say about me if I threw in the towel? Being a part of the Jackie community means that you recognize that life throws challenges but to embrace them. I believe in learning from the obstacles and moving forward with confidence.
Personally, since Jackie’s launch, I’ve been balancing work, school, planning my wedding, and marriage. I love to stay busy, though and I’ve had so much fun. Each day, as we grow, what may have looked like an obstacle at one point ends up being the catalyst to one of our greatest achievements. I love the way that works.
Please tell us about Jackie.
Jackie is a company that exists to help women better understand themselves by being a relentless voice of positivity and encouragement in their lives. The current vehicle for this mission is, you guessed it, fashion and e-commerce. I am Jackie’s Head Buyer and Stylist. This means I choose the brands that we sell to our clients… It may sound purely transactional, but what I didn’t mention is that with being Head Buyer, comes opportunities to attend shows in NYC and LA each year. Seeing and feeling the pieces that we are purchasing in person is vital to our success. Jackie’s motto is quality over quantity. We are helping women build a wardrobe rather than just buying clothes. We carry high-end, boutique brands made for the woman who recognizes that quality far outweighs quantity. She’s confident and capable. She knows that true style comes from being herself. She knows that that quality is a lifestyle. She knows that you don’t have to be loud to be heard. She knows that you don’t have to be showy to be sexy. She knows that being feminine and being strong are not mutually exclusive. She knows that life is fleeting and takes in every single moment. She knows the power of perfectly fitting jeans. She knows her roles- professional, artist, mom, athlete- and owns them. She knows who she is.
I have loved the amazing feedback that Jackie has received and the people that it has connected. We are constantly collaborating with professionals in the community whether it be decorators, photographers, nutritionists, even yoga instructors. I am proud of the safe space that Jackie has become for women to be themselves and feel inspired. On a larger scale, we have loved collaborating with companies like Darling, Business Insider, Cliche Magazine and Insider on all things fashion, styling and sustainability. It has been a great opportunity to further our goal to create an uplifting community for women.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was about five years old during Christmas time. I got up on the Estee Lauder makeup counter at Dillards and sang Christmas songs to everyone who passed by. My mom worked there as a make-up artist at the time.
