Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronald French.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The Elephant’s Foot Antiques was started in 1963 as a consignment shop in Palm Beach and was there for 15 years before moving to West Palm Beach. The shops name was chosen because the first owner had an elephant’s foot umbrella stand in the entrance to her house and as a small child she was told to put anything she no longer wanted in the elephant’s foot. Therefore, it became a depository for peoples unwanted items and the subsequent consignment shop. Marvin Ray has owned the business for 54 years and his partner has been in the business 39 years. Now in it’s third location of 6,500 square feet of showroom it has a large and loyal following of interior designers, collectors and private clientele.
Over the years the business has evolved as decorating and home furnishings have changed. The inventory is ever changing but consistently displays English, French and European furniture, accessories and lighting. In addition to the antique inventory, select new decorative items are shown with compatibility as to emphasis the nature of today’s styles. The shop is a treasure trove of traditional and eclectic items.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Changing styles in home decoration. The economic cycles and the willingness of people to spend money. These factors require an adjustment or re invention of ones business practices and product presentation as they occur.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in English and French antique furniture with the appropriate accessories to compliment the furniture. We are known for quality, an eclectic selection of merchandise and value pricing. We are most proud of the 54 years of ownership and direction of Marvin Ray and the fine reputation we have earned over those many years with so many repeat and loyal customers. Honesty and ethical have always been important for our success.
What were you like growing up?
Marvin was an Apollo Boys Choir member with a good education and exposed to good quality antique furniture and furnishings, thus his love of quality antiques. Ron was educated with a health care degree and worked in health care for 8 years before entering the antique business as Marvin’s partner.
