Rodrigo and Lisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a former employee of larger moving companies, Rodrigo always dreamed of opening his own business to try and change some of the negative connotations that exist within the moving industry today.
Starting from zero, Rodrigo left his current career with his sights set on developing a company based on integrity, respect, honesty, and trust.
With only 1 truck, a small closet of an office, a couple old moving friends, and a giant leap of faith, Rodrigo began paying for leads, cold-calling potential moves, and developing his own website to try to create business and get his name out there. Going on every move, big or small, Rodrigo always treated every customer as a member of the family and made sure that at the end of the day, everyone was happy. Night and day he was constantly researching any feasible advertising methods to strengthen awareness and relying on positive word of mouth to drive the company forward and gain recognition.
Month after month passed and with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, America’s Family Moving & Storage survived and began to pick up steam. Clients were calling us for estimates because of our growing, positive online presence and from happy customer referrals. Eventually, things got to be so busy, Rodrigo enlisted the help of his wife (then girlfriend), Lisa. She ended up leaving her job and jumped in to help manage the office and growing schedule.
As the years passed our employees, truck fleet, as well as office space grew as we ventured into the world of storage along with moving. With private storage facilities, we were also able to offer our clients a safe, secure place to store their belongings for as long or as little as they needed.
Fast forward to today, America’s Family has been open for over six years now and we’ve grown exponentially due to our hard work, professional values, goals, and a strong dedication to our customers. Running your own business is a daily battle, but we are a flourishing, family company who hasn’t forgotten to treat people how we would like to be treated, like human beings.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to where we are now wasn’t and isn’t always a smooth one. As first-time business owners, there has definitely been a few bumps in the road.
In the beginning, just getting business was tough and keeping enough money in the bank to support our expenses (payroll, truck maintenance, advertising, office rent, moving supplies) proved to be difficult. Finding a balance between competitive pricing and still being able to pay the bills was hard. You’re also competing against numerous larger, more established companies that already have their name out there. (which actually turned out to be a positive for us in the long run, so many had horrible reputations and they looked to us like a breath of fresh air)
When dealing with employees as well as customers and their personal belongings, it is difficult to make everyone happy at all times. We always strive to do the right thing by our clients and we pride ourselves on being an honest company. But accidents do happen and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
Finding employees you can trust is also a huge part of having a successful and profitable business. It is imperative to have trustworthy movers who you don’t have to worry about around expensive items or in millionaire mansions.
Working with your significant other also comes with its own unique set of challenges. Stress is high at times, and it does put pressure on a relationship.
