Today we’d like to introduce you to Rod Cortizo. He shares his story with us below:
Born in Brazil, Rod was raised by his mom, grandmother, and older sister. He quickly saw how powerful women could be, and how much they were impacted by their own personal health and fitness, or lack thereof. He remembers seeing his mom overwhelmed and confused about what steps to take to lose weight and feel better about herself. Years later, he moved to the U.S. and graduated from Fitness Institute International. He started holding transformation programs and quickly developed a phenomenal reputation for helping women get in the best shape of their lives. He opened Rodsquad Women’s Fitness in 2004 in Boca Raton, FL, and has helped thousands of women lose weight, tone up, and totally transform their health, physique, and confidence. Today, he offers virtual transformation programs and health & fitness coaching for women around the world. He still owns a Rodsquad location in Boca Raton, which is known as the best female-only personal training facility in Florida.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Rod has been trying to convince women for over 20 years that the combination of weight training and adequate protein intake is the way to rescue their metabolism. It’s been a long, difficult road since many women have been afraid of working with weights to build muscle. Most women have been sadly misled to believe that weight training will make them look bulky or masculine. By the contrary, Rod has been saying for two decades that “muscle is the organ of youth.” He’s been preaching the importance of using weight training to ward off sarcopenia, the natural muscle loss that starts at age 30 for all women. Just in the past two years, he’s finally seen an uptick in women who know they need to focus on strength training for both overall health and physical appearance. Overcoming this challenge of convincing women to work out in the best way for them (instead of playing it safe with yoga, pilates, aerobics, or treadmill) has been a huge challenge.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson Rod has learned over his career in the health and fitness industry is that new diets and exercise trends come and go, and it’s critical for him to stick with tried and true, age-old principles that will get his clients results every single time. By the time women join Rodsquad, most of them have tried dozens of gyms, diets, and fitness programs, and they’re frustrated and confused. Rod takes them back to basic, sustainable principles that will help them get results they can maintain for life. While it’s tempting for most fitness trainers to go along with the latest fads, or as Rod calls it, “entertainment fitness,” Rod prides himself on staying focused on the same nutrition and exercise strategies that have worked for centuries.
