Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Herrera de Ramirez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was casually born in Maracaibo, Venezuela because my father was military, so we moved quite often around Venezuela and even abroad. That’s how I had the great opportunity to live twice in the USA as a child. In 1976, I met Luis, who I married in 1982. For many years we made a delicious living in our country. In 2004, we were forced to flee our homeland to escape political prosecution, just to start all over again, along with our two teenage children; 18 and 16 then.
Wherever we went to live, I started a new venture, getting to know a lot of people, learning from them. Along the way, I learned and grew my fondness for people, for interaction. I learned from them and saw that I could develop relationships reaching people’s emotions. With time, I improved my ability to getting close to people, getting to their feelings, their fears, their aspirations. This allowed me to help them build high confidence in their skills and strengths to succeed in their initiatives. The results drove me to obtain a certification as a business coach. I have had the opportunity to be an entrepreneur and also work for the corporate world. I have been responsible for the development of organizations of up to 3,000 people.
I make a great team with my husband. He is pragmatic, method, and process-oriented. I am the people person; I look inside the people. So, we complement each other, and I would say, this is what makes us different at SCUDO. From the day we create SCUDO we were determined to help entrepreneurs do better and avoid some of the mistakes that wore very costly for us.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 1998, a very complex and damaging political process started to take hold of the country. What was happening was against our personal values and principles. We, as a family, decided to speak out and opposed such a process. In 2003, we were subject to political persecution. Our very way of life was denied to us, forcing us to flee our country. In 2004, we had to start over in the USA, our new home and nation. This was very hard. We made every mistake in the book. We learned a lot from our mistakes in the first two years in the USA. It was then when we decided to start working consulting, to help immigrants avoid these mistakes; we have been doing this for 15 years here in the USA. We learn every day from our interactions with customers. All this learning enables us to do cross-fertilization of experiences; I would even say this the largest source of knowledge you can get.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SCUDO Consulting – what should we know?
At SCUDO Consulting, we help entrepreneurs transform their ideas into thriving businesses. Entrepreneurship is a world full of uncertainty. This is where the combination of abilities works beautifully. Luis deals with the techniques, the process, the latest methods. I deal with the emotions that dominate the determination of the entrepreneurs to proceed, cautiously, but unstoppable.
We also help established businesspeople strengthen their abilities to better manage their businesses. We do business plans, business performance evaluations, and help them enhance their internal business processes. In general, we help managers to get a much better view and understanding of their businesses and their environments, to enable them to become better strategic managers. That makes a huge different in the way the entrepreneur establishes and grows their business.
