Meet Reese Whitely of Complex Health and Wellness/Magic City Cup in Coral Gables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reese Whitely.

Reese, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am from Kingston, Jamaica originally and came to the United States at a young age. In doing so I was exposed to a variety of cultures and a variety of persons from various backgrounds and economic statuses. Due to this, I have always had a passion for people and a passion for connecting those around me to create opportunities for all to whom I come in contact with.

I went to college on a basketball scholarship and attended three different schools in undergrad. I attended FAMU, Pensacola State College, and Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. As you can tell, I have had my fair share of exposure to even more diversity going to those three institutions. While in attendance at my last school, Faulkner, I developed a passion to help and serve others. I then switched my focus to sports medicine under rehabilitation and training. Not only did I start doing internships in that field but I was also given the opportunity to continue my passion in Africa on a missions trip to Malawi. These experiences overall molded me to who I am today and honestly has allowed me to be able to connect, meet, help, and inspire others all the while.

After undergrad, I ended up attending FIU for my Masters of Science in Athletic Training where I was blessed enough to work with the Indianapolis Colts, FIU Soccer, FIU Football, Nascar, The Miami Marathon, and many others. This expanded the way I have come to practice through experience and mentorship. After Graduation, I immediately went into independent practice. This has allowed for me to continue to connect with persons from all backgrounds as well as help them through my field of expertise.

One of my connections actually sent me to the World Cup last year. After flying back from Russia I came up with a plan to connect all the countries Miami has within the city through soccer. To allow for unity to occur despite the division of the city was something that was on my heart for years, and now I was able to do it. I then formed the Magic City Cup. This is a 12 country World Cup Format soccer tournament that represents the demographic of the city. It occurred over two weekends and gained traction with having over ten major sponsors including Magic City Casino, Magic City Hustle, Nike Miami Beach, Soccer Locker, Rod Speed, Bacardi, Reign, Racket, and Pepsi just to name a few.

All in all, I have been graced to create different projects through the passion that I have developed over the years and I am extremely excited for the development of Complex Health and Wellness as well as The Magic City Cup.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think anything great has a smooth road. They involve lack of sleep, high stress at times, and situations being thrown at you to which you will have to think on your feet and figure it out.

I went to School for Sports Medicine and ended up having to create a business route with no business education. You gain knowledge as you go and you surround yourself with the right people/mentors and the obstacles become enjoyable.

I believe that every challenge is made for development. Therefore when another comes my way, I take it with a smile because I know that it will produce character.

Please tell us about Complex Health and Wellness/Magic City Cup.
I am a sports medicine professional that caters more so in wholistic care. I know the value in not being a one dimensional practitioner because we aren’t one dimensional being. We are composed of many parts and those parts will allow us to be in a certain state of being based on what we do with ourselves. Therefore, its important to consider your physical state, mental state, how you handle stress, what you are consuming, and meditative techniques as a unique individual.

I work with athletes, stay at home moms, business owners, etc. We at Complex perform physical therapy, rehabilitation, training, postural corrections, and nutrition.

I am most proud that my brand has the ability to connect with others and allow for others to be the best version of themselves.

Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
In the next 5-10 years, it will be more apparent that wholistic way of service is the way to go. I believe that people are starting to understand pain and dysfunction better and it’s not just the physical portion but it is also what we eat, how we meditate etc.
