Today we’d like to introduce you to Redzuan Razak.
Redzuan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Malaysia, and I migrated to the United States when I was sixteen years old. Holding high regard for American values, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where I served the position of fire team leader. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Marines I resided in San Diego, California where I pursued the “American dream” by purchasing my first home in 2006. I then relocated to Miami and attended the University of Miami where I obtained my Bachelor of Arts with a business minor. I decided to remain in Miami after graduating from the University, as I had fallen in love with the city.
Following college, I worked as the head of business development for a Malaysian company for four years. After which I started a real estate investment company that invests in distressed homes and rental properties. In the beginning, I had found it hard to find a Realtor® to work with. So, I had decided to become one myself and learn the ins and outs of South Florida’s real estate market. After receiving my real estate license, I felt that I can share my integrity, dedication and discipline that was instilled within me by the United States Marine Corps, and help serve others to be able to achieve their real estate goals. I then signed up with Macken Realty, a local family owned brokerage, where I had received tremendous support and training.
In my spare time, I serve as the director of advocacy for the Florida Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, where I advocate for people and veterans with disabilities alike to our local, state and federal elected officials. I also enjoy participating in marathons, biking, scuba diving, and traveling with my family. I often visit Italy where my in-laws reside, and through those times I have become a competent Italian speaker.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I do not believe that any road to success has ever been smooth. I have learned of many stories of entrepreneurs who have been on the brink of homelessness before finally making it through.
My story is not that much different. I have been highly leveraged and found several occasions where I thought to myself how will I ever get myself out of this. I have learned some tough lessons early on in my career and it has molded me to be the person I am today. Self-doubt came into play when I first became a Realtor®, I thought to myself… How could I become an effective agent? I can’t show the second floor of the property because I am unable to go upstairs due to my disability? Will this turn clients away?
I think that all these barriers act as a teaching moment that will ultimately make me better at what I do. People have surprised me by their capacity to have an open outlook on others; by accepting me as a professional despite my disabilities. I would also surprise them by muscling up a couple of steps into the front door of a home where sometimes I would cheekily say to my clients “If I work this hard to just show you a home, imagine how hard I would work for you on all of the other things”.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a Realtor® that specializes in investment and residential real estate. I work with a lot of veterans and young adults. I am especially grateful when I have the opportunity to help our nation’s heroes gain home ownership. I would say that what separates me is my willingness to keep educating myself, I am mission driven and I will deal with others honestly.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I attribute the characteristics to my success to those instilled within me by the Marines. Its core values of Honor, Courage, Commitment has been a guiding light for my life ever since then.
