Meet Patricia Perez Abreu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Perez Abreu.

Patricia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Cuba, then moved at an early age to Spain, where, in Barcelona, I studied photography. I felt the strong need to find a way to express myself, and photography was the tool with which I felt most connected. From the beginning, I fell in love with the still camera, but life sometimes leads you off of the path you had planned. Before finishing my studies, I was hired to work in the Camera Department on a TV series. I thought it was a great opportunity, so I jumped in with both feet and didn’t look back for almost a decade. Although it was related to my new career, I set aside my still camera. Though I wasn’t practicing explicitly, I was learning; working alongside great photographers, art directors, make up artists, etc.

In 2017, I moved to the United States with my husband and our child. It was here, where I realized I wasn’t emotionally tied to making television (or films) anymore. I had finally found my way back to the still camera. In the spontaneous, messy, imperfect, and abstract, I’ve found a way to transmit my creative imagination. My series “Beneath the Surface” is a good example of that.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is always bumps in the road, and I know there are many yet to cross. My first struggle was to find the kind of photography and style I feel comfortable. At first, I thought I should do weddings and/or lifestyle photography. It didn’t work for me. Is not there was no space for creativity but it is contains into certain parameters. I needed something more malleable. I need more freedom.

Finding ways to make it profitable is the biggest bump for an artist. Is a continuous struggle because we are not meant to work for that. Fortunately, nowadays, the Internet have shrunk the world and gives us access to innumerable platforms in where to show and sell our art. This is also a great way to have more independence from the Galleries. Saatchi Art and Chairish have been great partners for me.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an artist. I am a photographer. I am specialized in Fine Art Photography. One of my most successful series is “Beneath the Surface.” Is a group of different portraits influence by water. I photograph people while they are swimming or just moving under the water. After that, I work in editing with the colors and layers to enhance the abstract aspect of those waves from the water and movements from the person. The end result is like paintings and I love the emotional charge of each of them.

“Ethan” is a photo of my oldest son under the water at night. For me is packed with emotion and mystery. This photo has sold around 20 times in different sizes in the last couple of months. Seen that collectors and interior designers feel compelled with it encourages me to continue.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The discipline of doing. That has been the secret to my success here.
