Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyrva Dorelus.
Nyrva, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Nyrva Dorelus and I am a Full-time makeup artist. I have been doing makeup for nine years now! It didn’t always start out that way. My makeup journey happens in quite a Funny way. I was never really a huge makeup person.
Growing up I just wanted to be a lady like as I can which to me that included doing my hair, wearing nice clothes, and making sure my face was always pretty! When I say Pretty!!! That meant wearing lip gloss, mascara, some powder I bought from the hair store so my face was shine-free and, and also a color eyeshadow that match the shirt I was wearing to work. Long story short, I was working at Jc penny in the man’s department when one of the managers ask if I wanted to work at Sephora inside JC penny because I always look well put together she said.
Not knowing what that was I instantly ask her “ What is a Sephora??”. She explained and my next question was “ Do I get RAISE” and she said “ YES ”. I worked for Sephora for four years and fell in love with the beauty in makeup! Wanted to learn and grow as an artist I soon Moved on to working for Mac cosmetics for three years, then quitting to becoming a Full-time Makeup Artist! Work for myself!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Boy, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all!! One struggle I face during my journey as a full-time makeup artist is separating the Business from my passion. As an artist, you only think about the ART! Making sure your clients are happy, not just from the outside but from the inside as well! Making sure they are comfortable and please with not just your work but with you. But as a business, you think about the Business as a whole. If a decision is a smart business decision or not. If it didn’t make sense you won’t do it just to make people happy, as long as it’s a smart business decision. I’m still learning that as a Businesswoman.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
My business is to provide makeup services for special occasions such as wedding, baby shower, birthdays and television. I specialize in beauty makeup! I love to enhance a woman’s natural beauty not to transform them into someone completely different. I am very proud of that! When a client tells me they love their makeup because it looks so natural and they still look like themselves! That makes my day!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I look up to a lot of fellow artists like myself in the makeup industry especially Nordia Cameron-Cunningham. When I decided to become a full-time makeup artist. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I just took a Leap of faith and knew God would see me through which he has and continue to do. I had no one to ask any questions, because out of my group of friends I was the first one to brand out to do makeup full time.
So when I was feeling lost she was the one person who never turns me away and answers any questions I had. I consider her as a mentor even though I never use those words with her. I met her when I got the opportunity to do makeup for Wags Miami. A reality tv show on Etv. She was so sweet and welcoming and still to this day, she’s is the sweetest and I admire her as an artist and as a businessman.
