Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found my passion in lactation and the motherhood niche after becoming a young mother. I had so many difficulties breastfeeding my first I was ready to give up by day 3 of his life. My husband encouraged me to pump for the “time being,” and that was where it all started.
I am exclusively pumped with my first for one year. By God’s grace, we made it to 13 months of mainly nursing with my 2nd. After both journeys, I went to pursue my certification in lactation. I became a certified breastfeeding specialist but was stuck on how I would make it a career. I was a waitress for the time being and decided one day, ‘Why not start an online business doing this?’. Like posting on social media, etc.
After sharing my plan with some colleagues, I was told blatantly by one of them, “That’s not a good idea.” That drove me to further pursue this route. I started posting ALL I knew about lactation on my social media account (@themilknest). In 1 year of starting the account, it grew to 88K! I left my waitressing job and am currently doing what I love full-time.
We currently offer 1:1 virtual consultations (take insurance if approved), offer online educational courses on breastfeeding, & partner with well-known brands.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can honestly say, by God’s grace, it has been incredible. The only cons I can see I find myself sometimes “dealing” with are negative comments on social media, but I take it with a grain of salt and learn to move on gracefully.
Another thing would be balancing motherhood and career. Sometimes I feel “guilty” for looking at my phone but in fact I am working. I currently have my 3-year-old with me while my oldest is at school. I am still learning how to manage that.
