Meet Neil Cohen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neil Cohen.

Neil, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in high school, my family and I lived in Key West. My father, who always had a love for photography, decided to open a photo lab. I started working there while in my junior year and quickly found an interest. I took my 1st photography class in my senior year and we would leave campus to use the darkroom at the college. I went to tour The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale at the possibility of going there after graduation and as soon as I walked in the darkroom, I was hooked! I started in the fall session of 1999 and received my Associate of Science in Photography degree in 2001.

While in school at The Art Institute, I was working at a small portrait studio in Weston, Fl. The lab we were using at the time contacted me and told me about a company in Boca Raton, Fl, that was looking for someone to run their photography department. After an interview, I started working at the company and learning about the event industry. The day I received my degree, I became full time and had to prepare for a very fast-paced wild ride. At that company, I learned to hone in my skills, capturing Weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Family Portraits and Corporate Events. I also found my niche as a people person and learned the ins and outs of the Photography Industry from the shooting side to the business side.

After a five year run with them, I decided it was time to start my own company. I opened up Neil Cohen Photography in June of 2006, which was based in Palm Springs, Fl at the time. In 2016 I relocated my business to Royal Palm Beach, Fl, where it remains currently.

In 2011, I put on my 1st solo gallery show “Passions Collide” with the focus on my Dance Photography, which portrayed beautiful dancers in a rundown, dilapidated environments from Miami, Fl to Seabring, Fl. I soon became the staff photographer for a local Dance Magazine, which I did for three years. Since then, I have put on two more shows with the last being held at the Palm Beach Cultural Council, where my work was displayed for an entire month.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would say just like in any industry, you have your ups and downs. In my industry, however, you pretty much only have one chance to get it right and not miss the shot. I was young, getting into this field and still had a lot to learn about business. I still pride myself in customer service and try to listen to my clients’ wants and needs to ensure that every photo I take will help to relive the special moments in their lives.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer who creates dramatic photos using expert lighting, vivid colors and passionate poses. I have photographed in studios, tropical locations, historic hotels and romantic gardens. I see myself as a visual storyteller, capturing the love and intimacy between couples and families. My focus is on my subjects – their emotions and relationships – while still including important details in the backgrounds. My goal is to provide my client with memories that will last a lifetime!

I specialize in Weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Portraits and Dance Photography. I am most proud of the fact that my clients still get a high level of customer service, which is something that gets lost nowadays. I think what sets me apart from others is that all of my clients, whether they book the smallest package or the largest, they are treated like they are my only client. I pride myself on making them feel comfortable while shooting and still get their final product in a timely fashion.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the fact that our city is so diverse. I love meeting and working with people from all different walks of life. Everyone has a unique story about them and I love to be able to capture that and show it in my photos.
