Meet Natalia Marin of Ocho Placas Tattoo co. in Calle Ocho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalia Marin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Natalia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I loved drawing and painting and was fascinated by my siblings’ tattoos but never considered tattooing as a career option until I was 17 or 18 when a casual conversation with a close friend turned into a crash course. When I turned 21, I was granted an apprenticeship. Being in a shop environment motivated me to work hard on improving my skills and that exposure to the community stoked my creativity and desire to paint. Doing something I love and surrounding myself with talented people gives me the energy and enthusiasm to keep moving forward and getting better. I never want to stop learning and pushing my own boundaries.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m never satisfied with just coasting and producing average tattoos. I think if you want anything badly enough you have to force yourself out of your comfort zone. Sometimes, that means trying and failing at a new artistic style and getting frustrated at the slow progress. Sometimes, it means a change of scenery. Being a woman in a male-dominated industry has come with its own set of challenges but I don’t let outdated, sexist attitudes get to me. If anything, they’ve made me more dedicated to my craft. Success is the only real way of silencing anyone that thinks I’m less capable of being a great tattooer because I’m a woman. That being said, it really is a fun job and there’s so much freedom to move around and express yourself creatively. Every obstacle I’ve come up against has made me who I am and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Please tell us about Nataliamarintattoos.
I tattoo alongside amazing artists at Ocho Placas Tattoo Company. My designs are based on classic tattoo imagery, which is labeled as traditional tattoos. I am constantly creating different designs. This gives my clients the freedom to find what tattoo suits them best.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would do everything the same. The people I have met, and the experiences I have gained have molded me into the tattooer I am today.
