Today we’d like to introduce you to Misha Vaidya.
Misha, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story started in London, as a little girl’s love for drawing, color and honestly anything artistic. My creative enthusiasm was always greatly encouraged by everyone, especially by my parents. For as long as I can remember, I watched my mum create the most unique, feminine and sometimes crazy (imagine solar system earrings and gigantic shoulder pads) takes on the traditional suit. Whilst this was primarily due to her climbing an otherwise male-dominated corporate ladder, it was the start of something for me! It was the first time where I could channel my individual loves for drawing, color, texture, and art, into one specialty; fashion.
Fast-forward a number of years… I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design, traded city lights for palm trees and snow flurries for sunshine, and proceeded to receive my Master of Arts in Public Relations, from the University of Miami.
Fast-fast-fast forward to now, after years of learning and experimenting, several New York Fashion Week shows, meeting and collaborating with so many talented individuals, and eventually a re-brand, we now have MISHA VAIDYA; a ready-to-wear label featured in Vogue, Glamour, Vanity Fair and Elle.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create contemporary womenswear; including collections of separates, dresses, jackets, tees, and accessories. Why? That’s a good question. Aside from loving the ability to create “wearable art,” I love that I’m able to share my passion with others, and on top of that, use it as a vehicle to share thoughts that are important to me.
As a brand, we place a lot of focus on quality and ethically made pieces. We believe in maintaining this beautiful planet that we call home. Therefore sustainability is key to everything we create; from the clothing and techniques to the supplies and collaborations, we form. We even have a hat available currently that for each purchase, we promise to plant a seed (the garden is certainly thanking us for that decision)!
In terms of a message, I always wanted the collections to be more than just pretty pieces that people compliment you on; they’re designed to remind a woman of one simple concept; that she IS and ALWAYS will be, “worth it,” – the name of our current capsule collection.
We live in a world that encourages comparison at every corner, whether it’s through a magazine, billboard, or on all these lovely little social platforms. A world designed to make us uneasy, to make us doubt ourselves and often to encourage that awful little internal self-confidence-battle.
The most cliché topic, but clichés must be clichés for a reason?! Love yourself, don’t question your journey, try not to compare lives AND likes; own your reality without apology. No one is you; that’s your superpower.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
For me, collaborating with like-minded people has been one of the most important aspects of my business. By working with people with similar beliefs and goals, as well as working with other types of creative talent, I’ve been able to garner a strong support system, share experiences, events and also successes. Financial challenges are among the hardest, for any industry, the best advice I could give (other than not to give up) is to take it one-step-at-a-time, remembering that even if you start small, you need to ensure that your business strategy is scalable in the long term.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
First of all, to all those who want to support, THANK YOU! You can find our full collections on MISHAVAIDYA.COM / You can also shop and see what we’re up to on Instagram @mishavaidya
