Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikey Barreneche.
Mikey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was 20 years old my interest in DJing sparked after going to a music festival. I bought my first piece of DJ gear and started practicing every day. I became addicted to learning the craft, two years later I started producing my own music. When I started releasing music is when I started getting attention from EDM fans around the world. I started to get offers about local shows for the first year. Now I am in my second year and my biggest show has gotten me to play in LA for the first time.
Has it been a smooth road?
I can’t say the road has not been smooth but when I look at it overall, it has not been rough either. I am always on a steady incline to bigger things. I am always so hungry to get to the next level as fast as possible without taking any shortcuts. The biggest struggle is that I wish there were two of me! I have so many musical ideas in my head and I can only do them 1 at a time.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I make music and a DJ. I would say I specialize in DJing because that is what I’m best at but I am known for the music I make. I am most proud of where music has taken me recently and I’m proud of the fact that people in other parts of the world like me and only found out who I was because of my music. What sets me apart from others is my mentality. There is something burning inside me that I don’t believe a lot of others have. I try and push my influence on my friends. I don’t ever stop learning. I approach my career as sports. I work on it every day because I really have no choice. There is no backup plan, I don’t need one. No one can stop me from getting what I want. Whether anyone wants to believe that or not is up to them. No matter what they will have to see me do exactly what I said I would. This mentality carries over to something like DJing. I’m confident in my abilities because I worked many hours to learn.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The weather is so great here just off the fact that it does not get cold. My family is here. I love getting inspired just by driving to the beach. What I like least about our city is just that the market for my music is not so big here but that is okay. Every city should not be the same.
