Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Mascaro.
Miguel, before we jump into specific questions about your practice, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Ecuador. South Florida was always my idea of “what the United States” is. After finishing my training in NYC, my wife and I were thinking about where we would like to start our professional lives. South Florida checked off all the boxes – friendly people, beautiful weather and beaches, etc.
Once in South Florida, I joined Tom Tzikas in practice. He is one of the true pioneers in facial fat grafting and allowed for my natural growth as a surgeon while also being able to improve my techniques with one of the best. Over time, I was able to develop and perfect the procedure I’m most well known for – the lip lift. I do anywhere between 7 and 10 of them a week – more than anyone else in the country. Patients from all over the world come for this – I’m sure the beautiful scenery of South Florida makes the decision to come that much easier for them!
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been hard work. Cosmetic facial plastic surgery in South Florida is an extremely saturated market. The thing most people don’t realize is not only are there a lot of surgeons here, but the doctors in South America are very good as well! So being able to stand out was a challenge. Coming in, marking your ground and thriving can be extremely difficult. That being said, treating patients the way that you like to be treated, providing bespoke-individualized care, and delivering the newest techniques has helped immensely. The hardest has been combating the misinformation online really. There are so many practitioners who use photoshop and manipulate their images online. After seeing this for so many years, I started combating it by specifically showing up-close pictures, high resolution, educating on what people should see and look out for. Knowledge always trumps misinformation.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery story. Tell us more about your practice.
5th Avenue Plastic Surgery is a niche cosmetic plastic surgery office where we focus on only providing the latest and most proven treatments – both non-surgical and surgical. Every day there are new claims over treatments that sound “too good to be true”. Some are great. Most are not. We really focus on delivering the best results for our patients. I specialize in facial plastic surgery – everything from facelifts, rhinoplasty, eyelids, hair transplants and what I’m most known for, lip lifts.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The biggest shift I see in cosmetics is towards more evidence-based treatments. Advances in minimally invasive treatments have been immense over the last few years. However, success rate on these treatments has been anywhere from disappointing to moderate. As we hone in on “what really works” and are able to specifically determine who will garner what kind of benefit more effectively, we as practitioners will be better off and so will patients. Also, as this happens, we will see a bigger swing back towards surgery. This is something that we are already seeing as people want more “permanent” changes. Fillers and injectables will continue to improve and provide more customized levels of improvement.
