Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle VanTine.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Growing up, there was no surprise what was under the Christmas tree. Doctor kits for my sister, and art supplies for me. My mom tells me it would take 20 minutes to walk anywhere as I would continually point out flowers growing through the pavement cracks, or dew drops sitting on the leaves. I suppose I always had an eye for beauty, which I felt compelled to share.
As everyone expected, I went to school for Fine Arts where I spent years painting, drawing, sculpting, designing, sketching and clicking. This is where I was introduced to photography; studying digital and film photography. My grandma gave me her A-1 film camera from the late 70s which I still pull out with a roll of black and white TX 400 to this day. After teaching art and taking photography jobs on the side for four years, I went full time as a photographer in 2008, and it’s been one of the best decisions of my life.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anyone who’s owned a small business had their fair share of battle wounds. It takes an inordinate amount of stamina to push through the hurdles that come naturally of owning a business. Its fun, challenging, but it’s not for the faint of heart. The trick is just to learn to roll with the punches, shake of the blows, celebrate the victories, and focus on the joys of living full time off your passion.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Michelle VanTine Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’ve had the pleasure in my career to shoot a very wide variety of work. Some weekends I’ll find myself on a Capitol Hill rooftop in D.C. at a diplomatic wedding, and other weekends I’ll be shooting celebrities like Serena Williams at a Spartan race. I try to tie my wide range of subject matter together with two themes: color and creativity. While the hipster vintagy style is prevalent these days, I love a strong, bold, colorful, creatively composed shot. I focus on fun, relaxed, creative work. Lately, I’ve been photographing many portraits for Miami figures: architects, singers, artists, etc. and I’ve really enjoyed that.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I moved to Miami about a year ago after three years in the UK, and five years in D.C. I had a certain preconception about Miami: South beach, skimpy bikinis, and plastic surgery… I wasn’t sure it would be my cup of tea. I’ve been amazed to learn that Miami has such a broader, richer scope than I ever expected. Some weekends I’ll find myself kayaking through the mangroves on the Oleta River, while others I’ll listen to rising music artists in Wynwood or visiting a museum or gallery. There’s something for everyone, and I’ve really become a huge Miami fan.
My dislikes are some of those stereotypes I had coming into the city, but it’s easy to steer clear of that scene and enjoy the hundreds of other offerings in the Miami area.
