Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa McGee.
Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey has been a challenging one; I went from being a comfortable housewife, to motherhood and going through a terrible divorce, to alcohol addiction, and the death of Jonathan, the love of my life. I am no stranger to suffering, and no stranger to the healing benefits of yoga.
I am not only passionate about yoga, I am also a firm believer in holistic healing of the mind, body and soul and how there cannot be any healing of one without the other. I genuinely want to reach out and help others through yoga and reiki who have gone through similar pains and trauma I have experienced.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggles I have faced were all in my personal life – one of them being a deep-rooted alcohol addiction that stem from generations of alcoholism within my family, which I became aware of when I was having issues with my marriage.
That is the reason I am passionate about the Yoga of 12 Step Recovery, a program designed for recovering addicts and based on the 12 steps to heal addiction. This is something I am proud to offer at Jupiter Farms Yoga. Many of the instructors I have hired are also recovering addicts to help clients receive true empathy and a common understanding from everyone at the studio.
I have used my personal struggles to create a healing environment and support people in their own journey.
Another example is Prenatal Yoga. I have seen such a big difference in my life as a woman and as a mother after I started doing yoga, and I want to offer that same tool to expecting mothers.
Prenatal Yoga offers a safe, gentle practice in a calm, peaceful, and open environment. Postures are designed to increase and maintain balance and flexibility, body strength and endurance, particularly targeting muscles used in childbirth. We equip expecting mothers with breathing techniques for relaxation and better sleep, for use in labor and beyond into parenthood.
Jupiter Farms Yoga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Jupiter Farms Yoga is a certified yoga studio located in Jupiter, Florida, with teachers who are truly spiritual people, all of whom have dedicated their lives to spreading the message of mindfulness and health to their clients. Open since 2009, they continue today sharing their beliefs that life should be lived with joy, gratitude and a dedication to being present in the moment.
We are known for our unique offering of intertwining yoga with the classic 12-step recovery approach popularized by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 steps include admitting an individual has a problem and understanding that alone, they are powerless over their addiction. Founded in 2012, The Y12SR (shorthand for the Yoga of 12 step recovery) Foundation is a program of Off the Mat, Into the World. Their mission is to empower the lives of individuals and families affected by substance and behavioral addictions with relapse prevention practices that enhance physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
In addition to the Y12SR program, we offer Prenatal Yoga classes as well as a twelve month calendar of workshops ranging from chakra learning, the yoga sutras, beginner’s basic yoga workshops and the yamas and niyamas, ethical codes that allow followers to develop better relationships with ourselves and those around us.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Being in the moment. Balance. Faith. Letting go.
Every day, I set my intention without clinging to the results, and so far the progress is taking place little by little. It was through the process of learning to let go, learning to have faith during times of uncertainty, and asking the question: ‘how can I use my strengths and struggles to serve humanity’ that I became more sensitive to the intuitive nature of the universe, and become one with the collective consciousness that is emerging today in which we realize that we are all connected in some way shape or form, and we cannot harm or neglect one another or even ourselves in one way without paying the price or becoming out of balance. These imbalances always come back around just like a boomerang.
