Meet Mayumi Hasegawa of Mayumi Entertainment in Westchester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayumi Hasegawa.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in 2003 as an intern at BMG, a record company based in Coral Gables. I was about to graduate with a marking degree from FIU that same year. I started helping the director of press doing the promotional plans for the artist we had promoting their new song or album at that time. We had to make them a working plan which included all radio, TV, digital and printed press interviews. It would typically cover a week full of work.

After a couple of month as an intern, the Marketing Director asked me if I wanted to stay working there but this time as a company employee, and I accepted. After that the press director left to another company and I took her position as the new National Press Director. A year into it, BMG got sold to Sony Music and a couple of months later I went to work with a concert promoter, a totally different branch of the industry.

I work with NYK Productions for almost 5 years producing national and international concerts for artists like Shakira, Maná, Enrique Iglesias, Juanes, Julio Iglesias, Luis Miguel, Isabel Pantoja, Juan Gabriel, Lolita & Rosario Flores, Lena Burke, Alexander Pires, Tom Jones, Ricky Martin, among many other world renowned artists.

Since 2007 approximately, I have been a freelancer and working with my own company, Mayumi Entertainment, Inc. that was created on August 13, 2003.Today I’m more concentrated on artist management, booking and specially tour management, which Is what I do the most right now.

Currently I work with different Latin artists like Ha*Ash, Alicia Villarreal, and I’m the tour manager for Luis Fonsi, who is the #1 artist of the world right now after the hit song “Despacito”, giving me the opportunity to travel around the world to places like Vietnam, Morocco, Bucharest, Croatia, Russia, etc.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The music and entertainment industry is a beautiful world to work, but at the same time is if very difficult especially for a woman. It is an industry where you definitely have to love what you do, otherwise makes is very difficult to resist the rhythm.

The work is 24 hours and you are always reachable, no matter what it is, you phone is always on. Artist life seems very glamorous to the outside, but it takes a lot of hard work. Endless hours without sleeping, and sometimes, not even in a hotel, but on a tour bus, long flights, lots of hours at airports, spending the whole day at the venues, lots of days being apart from home and family, including special days and holidays, being on the road with at least 15 more people for a month, can get tiring at some point.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mayumi Entertainment, Inc. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As of right now my specialty is tour management. Taking care of everything that has to do with the logistics of the shows, clouding but not limited to the coordination of airfares, hotel, transportation plus making sure all the artist necessities are covered Production and hospitality wise.

I’m most proud of the good reputation I have accomplished doing an impeccable job with this for the past 15 years. Being good, flexible, having a good attitude and being nice to all that come across you. You can say no in a nice way and people would leave happy, not disappointed. There is no need for rudeness, with a kind way of saying and asking for things, most of the time you get what you ask for and even more.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to keep doing the best job I can. Making people want to work with my company because they know they will get the job done and worry free for them, and on top of that receive a compliment from the people that hired that artist and feel the good vibes they received from us. Receiving those compliments is the best feeling you can get, there you know you did a great job.

Great article. I have had the priviledge to be in touch with Mayumi or Mayumita (like we call her). She is such a hard worker, very professional and always willing to help. She is truly a model to follow. The entertainment industry should be grateful to have her.
