Today we’d like to introduce you to Maylai Salgado.
Maylai, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first started photography five years ago. A friend suggested I would take pictures of her since I was always taking pictures of myself and everything around me. Then another friend… I got myself a little camera and started charging very little, and in a few months with that money I collected, I decided to invest in a professional camera. I started shooting friends and their families, and it all very quickly started to become my new job!
I was working at a medical office at the time and I would juggle schedules to do both things but within eight months I left my office job and decided to make photography my full time, I had fallen in love!
To be honest, I had never thought I would end up in this profession. I have always been part of the art world. I was a professional dancer for 14 years and in college, I studied architecture. Photography has taken over my life, it takes a lot of dedication and love for the art to make it far. As a single mom, everyone looked at me like I was crazy to leave a secure job to pursue such a risky one. I think when I really want something, nothing stops me! Here I am, five years later, still doing photography. still in love with my every day, shooting mommies, families, engagements, quinces, weddings. Freezing amazing moments in time.
I am a self-taught photographer, single mother with a successful business which is just starting to grow because my goals, my dreams are way bigger compared to the ones I have already achieved. I feel so very blessed for being able to do what I love every day and being able to provide everlasting memories for the best clients I could ask for!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Investing in your business, economically and personally, it’s never easy. As a single mom, I have struggled with time management at times. Busy seasons only get busier and I tend to become a workaholic easily! I try to spend as much time with my son and that included more editing through the night which takes away from my sleeping time. My health has suffered at times because things need to get done and most times being sick and taking care of yourself takes the back seat.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Alleyezonmay Photography story. Tell us more about your work.
Ok, so lol. Everyone thinks I specialize in maternity because it just so happens that 80% of my clients are pregnant!
But, honestly, I love doing it all! Maternity, Family, Children, Engagement, Boudoir, Wedding, Fashion, even food and product.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe that if you work hard enough and stay true to yourself and what you believe in, you will succeed! However, I am very lucky to have so many others love my job. Nothing makes me happier about my business than to have a pleased client.
