Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Palmer.
Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I would say, that I have been interested or skilled in disciplines that foster self-expression as long as I have known myself. Those who know me well can attest to my creative dance moves (lol!), while my teachers have often lauded my ability to communicate clearly via pen and paper (or Microsoft Word). Visual arts is another medium through which I am able to engage in storytelling, self-expression or communication. My journey started in high school where I would edit/make videos for friends. In college, my interest grew and some of my videos went viral on YouTube. These days, my interests center more around capturing moments from a bird’s point of view. My drone interests began a few years ago as just a hobby. Three years later and I am now FAA certified; having worked with insurance, marketing and event planning companies.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a smooth road. I am for the most part a freelancer which gives me the flexibility I need to give my hectic schedule (full-time work + full-time grad student). The biggest challenge I have encountered is not having the availability to make use of the opportunities that come up.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I provide businesses with aerial media solutions. I serve various industries with entertainment and insurance being the main ones. I have been dabbling in portrait photography recently but I am most known for my aerial images and videos, some of which have been featured in commercials. I am most proud of the quick and reliable service I was able to provide right after Hurricane Irma. There were a lot of damaged homes which needed aerial inspection.
What were you like growing up?
I was a bit of a track star growing up in Jamaica; representing the country and also competing at the collegiate level. Frugal (lol), introverted, mysterious, observant and analytical are the personality traits that I think have remained throughout my life. As a child, I don’t think I had many interests (maybe just soccer and track). These days everything interests me. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to take all of life in! Nevertheless, recharging my batteries usually involves a book, the beach or Netflix.
