Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Viera.
Martha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a dermatologist and cutaneous surgeon. Born in Venezuela, I finished medical school in 2001 at Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela. Following medical school, completed one year of general surgery and graduated from dermatology residency at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. With more than 20 years of experience in the field of medicine, I have worked in several renowned health centers, including Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fl. and Hospital of the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela. Additionally, I have been featured in 40 prestigious international publications and have been invited to speak at more than 30 conferences around the world about her expertise in dermatology and cutaneous surgery.
I am a volunteer faculty at the Department of Dermatology at the University of Miami, where I give my time to teach the residents in training. I’m a fellow member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Woman’s Dermatologic Society, Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, Venezuelan Society of Dermatology, and the International Society of Dermatology.
I have been awarded by Various organizations with honors, including:
• American Medical Association (AMA) Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA).
• 2008 Recognition of Excellence Award (Residents and Fellow Section of AMA).
• 2012 Women’s Dermatologic Society Mentorship Award.
In addition to practicing as a dermatologist, I am the director and coordinator of a non-profit organization for impoverished children in Venezuela, which feeds more than 5,000 children a month. I live in Coral Gables, Fl. and I am a dermatologist in a private practice at Doral Dermatology Group, seeing patients in two locations: Coral Gables, FL. and Doral, FL.
When not practicing medicine, I enjoy mindfulness meditation, yoga, and weight training. She is also a passionate photographer and has presented her work and art into several exhibits in Miami.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am a foreign medical graduate, and being in the US has not been easy to achieve my goals. Dermatology is one of the most (if not the most) difficult and demanded specialty to get in, and you have to be a top student as well as published many investigational works in order to be considered. I had to deal not only with the label of being a foreign medical graduate but also I was not an American citizen, so I had to work hard to get my green card and be a settled citizen of the United States.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I am a dermatologist. I practice medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. My practice is very comprehensive since I share it with a Mohs surgeon who takes care of most of the skin cancer of our patients. Our practice sees all kinds of patients and ages, as well as dermatological conditions. In the same practice we offer top aesthetics treatments, we have the most innovative equipment and I am trained to do most of the latest procedures in aesthetic dermatology, caring also about your skin and antiaging process.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a very empathetic person who cares about my patients as if they were my own family. I listen to them, their concerns only sin but also emotionally. I think I practice integral medicine and I focus my approach to a healthy lifestyle where I introduce to my patient to an anti-aging healthy diet, skin care regimen and self-care practice in order to have wellbeing as a whole.
