Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariela Ortega.
Mariela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It can be said that I “fell” into fashion styling. I was not aware about that area of the industry. I just knew a wanted to something related to it. While doing my Foundation in fine arts in London my tutor suggested to enroll in a fashion styling night class to give it a try and that was it.
Nine years later I am still in love with it as the very first day. The last almost four years in Miami have been a great latter, I came to the city not knowing anyone or almost no one and I have been lucky to have an organic growth throughout my career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say smooth because every new project represents huge challenges. Getting to create a new contact, new portfolio, new clients its always hard, but as states, before it has been a very organic process for me here. I have has the right opportunities at the right time and I always feel very lucky.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
As a fashion stylist my job is always the same, but different. I help magazines, brands and individuals to create the right image for them. My strong suit is editorial styling for sure. I believe I am known for my layers, all my looks have at least to layers of clothes since I can’t seem to tell a story without them.
What I am the MOST proud of at the moment is that, despite the fact that I have the pleasure to work the amazing male photographers, makeup artist and designers my vast majority of my team and projects are 85% pure female team and I absolutely love that and it makes me proud every time I notice that we have an amazing synergy and smooth environment. I believe that the goal of every artist is being original in their field. For me what sets me apart in town is the way I combine materials, colors and textures.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As a child. Playing barbies endlessly, Changing their looks and organizing the “set”. In a teen, spending hours and hours going through magazines with a pen and post sticks and highlighting my favorite things.
