Meet Maria Apostolidis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Apostolidis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I transitioned to Miami from Greece six years ago with my 10 year old daughter, coming from the design and art world with over 14 years of international experience, always working to prioritize artists, designers, and their visions, I felt that there was a missing congruency between the world of art and design.

That was the moment that design art concepts was founded having as a focus the fusing of these two worlds. It was clear to me at that point that both markets were becoming vanity based, leaving creative individuals exploited by galleries with high exhibiting costs and no promises or promises never met.

Has it been a smooth road?
Figuring out how to best showcase the gallery online has been challenging.

A gallery should develop collectors in order to successfully sell art, thus it must present consistently fresh content and informative narrative if you want to encourage repeat visitors to the gallery’s online presence.

That is time-consuming and there is never enough time!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the d | a | c art space story. Tell us more about it.
We consider d | a | c as a one-stop institution for artists. From spaces for their exhibits to having someone manage them much like talent and sports agencies; we focus on the business side while allowing the artist to run free with their creativity. We are trying to do what a good commercial gallery used to do – and more; the ability to support the artist in everything he or she needs. Unlike a traditional art gallery that holds artists’ work unless they’re sold, we are constantly looking outside the gallery for other commercial dealers to carry the artists’ work as well as sell them by ourselves, chasing funding so our artists can create more or explore a different discipline and be able to prepare for exhibitions.

d | a | c does all the things a traditional gallery would do for an artist – but with added value and long-term relationship building.

d | a | concepts’ strives to carefully construct sustainable, agreements with artists/or designers and collectors. Our expertise rests in the fact that we do not see artists and designers as a vehicle of exploitation – the current trend in both industries – instead we will ensure that creativity is always protected.”

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
I was a good mix of girly-girl and tom-boy.

Well, neither Barbie dolls nor cars ever fascinated me as a kid. But yes, books ..books and more books always did, along with great movies. I was the obedient kid who never failed to abide by the rules set by her mother. Very opinionated at times… still am and with a great sense of justice.
