Meet Marcelo Zelicovich of Doctor Aromas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcelo Zelicovich.

Marcelo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The company began ten years ago with an innovative idea, a business plan, and a lot of hope. I used to work in Buenos Aires scenting public restrooms. I serviced a multitude of clients, and while this was not my specialty, one time I got a call from a client saying the entirety of their store, not the bathroom of course, reeked. Looking for the source, it occurred to me that it was coming from the air conditioning. The vent on the roof directly faced the smelliest creek in all of Buenos Aires, and the afternoon breeze was giving them all a taste. It was a sort of “aha!” moment. If smelly air could be evenly distributed through the air conditioning why couldn’t the best of smells? So, I paired up with Rolando to take on the task and Doctor Aromas was born.

At the beginning, we catered to luxury residential buildings in Miami, and it was not an easy task to sell our product. The concept of scented space had only been normalized in hotels and casinos, and we were trying to reach a broader audience. The smell of a space entirely transforms people’s perceptions of the space, and taints their experiences within them, so people certainly recognized that they needed our products once they tried them – it was more about getting them there. I have to credit our successes to a great product in which I always believed, and the philosophy that customer service was our priority. The fact that there has always been construction in the greater Miami area also helped, because new clients were appearing regularly! And realty companies truly understood the power of scent in selling a home, too.

Our two-man group has grown into a twenty-person team, and we went from servicing high-end buildings and hotels to offering scent to clients all over the country (and internationally, too!) in residences, offices, boutiques, spas, you name it!

Has it been a smooth road?
Our biggest challenge is also our biggest opportunity. The scent industry is growing and there is really no other product like ours. This gives us the chance to impact the most amount of people personally, which is exciting! That being said, there is a steep learning curve for our clients. It is our job to help people who have never heard of us to understand exactly what we do and why they would benefit from being our patrons. As a small company, getting ourselves out there and concisely being comprehensible to new potential clients can be quite difficult. We find that word of mouth, reviews, and people’s experiences within homes and buildings that use our product are a great help. Nonetheless, we are constantly searching for better ways to close that gap.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Doctor Aromas – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a small company that is ultimately in the business of bringing joy to our clients. We are very much a service-oriented organization and nothing is more rewarding than the reviews we receive – they’re definitely one of the things of which we are post proud. Most of our clients tell us how happy our scents make them feel, how their home is the best smelling home and the talk of the town, and how they feel we are personally invested in taking care of them. (Which we really are!)

We take pride in many things about Doctor Aromas, though. We like to think we are making a difference locally and this manifests in different ways.

For one, we are providing jobs in the community and encouraging our employees to grow both economically and professionally. We have a positive company culture – we work hard but it is still a welcoming environment (we have company dog, after all) where we promote mobility inside the company and want to help people to develop their strengths and achieve their career goals.

Additionally, we have a foundation through which we organize a yearly art contest called the Art of Aromas Competition. High school students have the opportunity to win scholarship money for creating the best piece of scented art. This competition challenges young artists not just to find inspiration in scent but to make art that incorporates said scent. Challenging them to work with new media opens a door for them to experiment and to grow as artists, and they are rewarded for it too! The hope is that the competition encourages them to explore their passions and gives them a bit of financial aid to pursue them.
