Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcelo Ghersi.
Marcelo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up here in South Florida, where I attended high school and college. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor of Sciences degree and Magna Cum Laude Honors. I then attended the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where I obtained my medical doctorate degree. Following medical school, I returned to South Florida to pursue post-graduate training. After working as a general surgery resident at Mount Sinai Medical Center, I joined the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Weston, where I successfully completed a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency program.
During my early private practice years, I developed a passion for aesthetic plastic surgery. In order to excel in this highly specialized field, I traveled across the country to visit and learn from some of the top surgeons in this specialty. I was fortunate to be selected to participate in one of the most exclusive and renowned advanced aesthetic plastic surgery fellowship training programs in the country at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital as well as Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. This experience granted me the opportunity to train directly under many of the world’s pioneers in plastic surgery of the nose and the aging face. I then returned to South Florida to co-found the plastic surgery institute of Miami, a premier aesthetic plastic surgery group practice in Coral Gables, Florida.
I am board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the leading accrediting body for plastic surgeons in the United States. I am also an active member of several professional organizations and currently hold active medical licenses in the states of Florida and New York. In addition to academic teaching appointments, I have active privileges at some of South Florida and New York’s most reputable hospitals. I have published numerous peer-reviewed articles and presented my work at major plastic surgery national meetings.
Lastly, I have made Coral Gables my home. I have been married over ten years and have three beautiful children. I enjoy traveling, reading, fitness and wine as my hobbies.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. I had a lot of struggles and hardships growing up. My parents divorced when I was six years old, and I moved from Venezuela to the US immediately after. During childhood and adolescence, we lived a very frugal life as finances were very tight for my mother. I started working at the age of 15 as a restaurant chef, and that experience helped me tremendously for the years I had ahead.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I’ve been in practice for about ten years. I perform mostly aesthetic surgery but specialize in cosmetic and functional surgery of the nose. The nose is my favorite part of the body to operate, and it currently makes up at least 75% of my practice. I also do a great deal of cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery; I would call this my second specialty. Having performed over 15,000 breast procedures, I enjoy these tremendously and I am delighted to use them to transform and make big positive changes in my patient’s lives.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My main goal is to continue to see my children grow and see them become stewards of our community. I look forward to continuing to learn, grow, and experience new places. From a professional perspective, I wish to continue growing and become one of the national leaders in rhinoplasty.
