Meet Makenzie Taguchi of Kenz Wellness in Little Havana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makenzie Taguchi.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Makenzie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in LA, an only child, natural introvert, and I think most definitely an old soul. I grew up around the Santa Monica mountains, and naturally spent a lot  of time exploring outdoors. I’ve  always been comfortable with solitude, and it’s seemed inherent to me as a person to believe and see a different way of doing things.

My path has not been the most traditional. I discovered an intrinsic passion with studying holistic healing when I was around 17. I began doing research on food, supplements, different ways of eating, and healing on all levels. For about 10 years I struggled with my health in all regards, went to many different Dr.s and practitioners, and it felt impossible to get a clear answer from anyone as to what was going on. However, The lack of answers sent me on my own discovery and gave me knowing that I was learning how to work with others through healing myself.

My Early 20’s were a time of major transformation. My dad passed early into them and this was a catalyst for a critical turning point. Over the course of the years following I did some big time soul searching. I danced and ate my way through Spain, did many different courses, studied plant-based nutrition, culinary arts, and different healing methods. It was my time of coming home to myself, and getting aligned with my purpose. There were a lot of highs and lows, but I always had this very clear knowing that life was preparing me in the most perfect ways for what I was meant to be doing. Each step I took brought me closer to myself, and it is, of course, an ever-evolving process.

I got into holistic healing because whether I liked it or not, the traditional way is something that never seemed to work for me. Now, I am a Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach, with a degree in Spiritual Psychology, and am going back to school to become a Board Certified Holistic Nutritionist. I also create gut-friendly, (zero- sugar, gluten free, vegan ) sweets.

Six months ago I decided to completely shake up my world and make the move to Miami. I had only visited once before, knew a good two people, but I felt it was exactly the change I needed. I donated most of my things, hopped on a plane with my dog Gilbert, and here we are.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not the smoothest road, but now I can look back and have an immense amount of compassion for myself, and big time relief that I am where I am now. There was a lot of dark, but also a lot of light, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The perspective and growth that I’ve gained from all that I’ve experienced feel irreplaceable, and I feel deeply grateful for it.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
About my work, I see what I do as holding space for people to heal, and supporting them in creating the bridge from where they are now to where they want to be. We all have the internal ability to heal ourselves, but I also believe, and know from personal experience, that support is key.

Being a functional medicine health coach basically means I help people create wellness in their lives, through action on all levels, mind, body, and spirit. I believe working on the internal is key, and that what works for everyone is different, so it’s about creating your own personal equation of what brings the most optimal wellness into your life. I feel most proud of the fact that I have learned what works through my own experience, and am truly developing my own way of working people. I feel deeply grateful for the ability to support others in this way.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
I was such a shy kid! In a way, I feel like I can be more playful now than I could when I was younger. I was super serious, felt things deeply, and I didn’t have a way yet of understanding how empathic I was, which definitely shaped how I experienced the world. My favorite place to be as a kid was either out in nature, or on the kitchen counter hanging with my mom as she cooked. My biggest passion growing up though was dance, the one place where all my shyness went away.
