Mabel, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been in love with the Fashion World but even more so, creating my own style and designs. Coming from generations of incredible warm talent stemming from my Grandmothers, I was always surrounded by pattern-making and couture designs. I was always mesmerized at what could be created, hand-made turning fashion into a unique collection like no other. Since my early teenage years, I have made my own creations and then becoming a Mother of two girls myself, creating theirs as well.
Even though my heart was in creating fashion my life took me into the legal field where I had a longstanding tedious career as a Paralegal taking me into the ropes of litigating and trial practice. Even then, my escape was finding time to create and express myself through fashion leading me to a tenure of retiring after 35 years of legal practice. The best decision I ever made and reward is where I am now.
I am the owner and creator of Sew M.I.A. Boutique and Fashion. Having grown up in South Florida and beautiful Miami, I always wanted to create my own with a flair of hand-made designs that flow with the same Caribbean air I’ve grown up in. With that in mind, Sew M.I.A. came to be with a combination boutique-styled fashion including my very own designs. Sew M.I.A. is my happy place and hope it will be yours too bringing back the art of hand-made fashion at a price level for all to enjoy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve always wanted to create and add to the Fashion and Accessory world and being in South Florida, that is a plus, but as they say… sometimes you must cross and move mountains to find your happy place. Prior to Sew M.I.A., I enjoyed a 35-year legal career and now know it was solely getting me ready to finally set the stage for the creation of Sew M.I.A. Sewing and fashion is how I express myself and has come to be at a perfect time in my life where I am able to enjoy what I do. Struggles are not always bad, just make you stronger to get to where you belong…

Sew M.I.A. Boutique and Fashion is based in Miami. Business is mostly conducted through ecommerce and social media. A combination of new styles and arrivals are announced weekly with the bonus of hand-made creations as well.
