Meet Luiz de Basto of De Basto Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luiz de Basto.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in yacht design a few years after graduating in architecture in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I found that designing boats was a perfect combination of my love for architecture and for cars.

I came to Miami looking to enter the international market but it meant that I had to start from zero. Nothing I did before was relevant, I had to prove myself on the US market. My office open on Brickell in 1995 and we are here until today.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not easy at all. The design market fluctuates with the economy and in 2008 the crisis affected all the major American shipyards and many closed the doors.

Over the years I had to change the work model of my office, to adapt to the advances in computers and internet. Nowadays we work with shipyards and private clients worldwide. Also the search for the best talent is not easy

So, as you know, we’re impressed with De Basto Designs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
DeBasto Designs is a multi-disciplinary yacht design firm based in Miami, founded in 1995. Luiz de Basto, President and Chief Designer, has been involved in the yacht design field for 3 decades designing more than 200 boats and yachts for over 40 yards and many clients in 15 countries.

The firm specializes exclusively in the design of luxury yachts, custom and production boats and unique commercial vessels. From the preliminary concept to the space planning, styling, and interior design, creativity and excellence are the main considerations, always with a constant awareness of function.

Recently we concluded the construction of the 102′ motor-yacht Northland at Burger Yachts and the 295′ project Shark with Oceanco in the Netherlands and we have the 53 meters Tala currently in construction at Turquoise Yachts.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Inside the office insisting on innovation. Outside keep working to see more of our designs built and cruising the waters.
