Meet Luis Nino of Sailing on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Nino.

Luis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My wife and I started sailing about 15 years ago. We went for a sailboat ride on our 25th anniversary and I fell in love with the feeling of connecting with nature through a sailboat. It was so intense that when we got back I told my wife “We have to get a sailboat to learn to sail, before I get too old”, later, we found a Tartan 34 in Tampa, in a very bad shape. So, we’ve got a very good deal, we had it for 10 years.

We learn to sail on it and we started the charter business with this little boat. Two years later, we acquire the 40 ft. Beneteau, an excellent boat for charters, very comfortable and very good-looking boat.

Business started to pick up after that, since people liked the boat a lot.

We have more than 230 five star reviews on Trip Advisor of the great service we offer.

We believe it’s all about service.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Competition has been tough, but I believe there are always people that like to ride with us.

Sailing on Biscayne Bay – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our business started by accident. When I lost my job as a consultant in digital printing in a Chicago printing Company, I had my small sailboat in Key Largo FL, and I wanted to keep sailing but since I had no income I have to do something, I said, I thought of opening a charter company with this boat. I created a website and became a Captain, I fell in love with Biscayne Bay, I always thought that people will pay to know this Bay, especially on a sailboat and found a slip at Dinner Key Marina, the rest is history.

We make sure all our guests have the best time ever, we’ll treat them like friends and my wife’s photography plays a big role in our services.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for us is to have customers satisfied with our offer, we can see the results in the reviews.

We believe that booking 8 trips or more per week can bring us good revenue, since we live on the boat we don’t have too many expenses, only if the boat breaks, or we get sick, so we need to keep a side for maintenance.
