Meet Lucy Collado of Gold Soul Sewing in Hialeah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Collado.

Lucy, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always loved clothing and runway. Oddly enough, I tried to become a model as a kid but felt awkward and gave it up and stuck to clothing. As I got a bit older, I would fix buttons and cut up jeans to shorts but nothing crazy. Not until I moved to Gainesville in 2017, after my best friend Karina passing, did I start looking into sewing and clothing manipulation. I started watching video after video for hours on end, teaching myself the basics. I ended up buying a tiny, toylike sewing machine that had no foot pedal and you had to turn it by hand. It was a mess. I had no clue what I was doing but it wasn’t going to stop me from at least trying. I grabbed clothes I wasn’t too attached to and started cutting away experimenting. Today, I am back in Hialeah doing alterations, while learning how to create my own patterns to make my own clothing one day.

Has it been a smooth road?
Unfortunately, being self-taught doesn’t come with the benefits you would get from going to a design school but it does make you hungrier. I’ve broken needles, almost broken my machines, ruined fabrics, worked in a factory making uniforms, you name it. Trial and error have been my style although it hasn’t been easy. It’s been worth it.

Please tell us about Gold Soul Sewing.
I specialize in clothing manipulation. I like to go into the skeletons of other people’s clothing and bring your ideas to life. I am proud to say that although I do alterations, my company isn’t limited to that. From hems to resizing to custom pieces. That is what sets my company apart. If I don’t know something I will learn it. The sky isn’t the limit.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My family. My friends and my boyfriend have been there for me from the very beginning. They didn’t tease me that it was only a hobby and that helped me keep striving for more knowledge and not be afraid of failure. The true motivation and running force behind this is my best friend Karina. She passed away in 2016 and I wanted to keep her spirit alive. So what better way than to have a brand inspired by the love and unique view we had for clothing and self-expression.
