Meet Lucinda Nixon of Hello Luci Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucinda Nixon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lucinda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From a young age, I have always had a creative spirit! I loved working with my hands, on art projects, scrapbooking and drawing. Around the age of eight or so, I decided that I wanted to be an architect and committed that to my mind for the next ten years!

I pursued a degree in architecture at the University Notre Dame, but during my time there, I also wanted to explore some of the other courses they offered. I took a few electives in printmaking and graphic design and was immediately hooked to graphic & type design in both the physical and digital form. I then switched my major and graduated with a degree in graphic design & printmaking. Being a multi-passionate creative, I was still interested in the architecture industry and wanted to explore that too! Immediately after college, I attended graduate school in New York City and completed my Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design. Upon graduating, I went to work as an interior designer full time in the commercial architecture industry.

While I was working as an interior designer, I always worked on graphic design projects as a side hustle to supplement my income, keep my technical skills fresh, and graphic design mind challenged. There was something about graphic design that always called to me, especially because I also love the online space and watching how design has been evolving with technology. Finding a balance between working full time and working on the side was always a challenge, but somewhere along the way, I decided I really wanted to pursue my own business full time. This past January, I was finally ready to take the leap, and Hello Luci Creative is now a full-time branding and website design studio!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! There have been many challenges along the way!

I think the main struggle I have had is being torn within myself. I often felt that I was letting myself or others down for not wanting to stick to what I had committed to when I was a kid. I slowly realized that it was totally okay to have multiple interests, passions and pivots. It sounds a little silly now, but this was the toughest for me. Accepting that it was okay to change directions and create my own path has been a HUGE shift for me. I’ve found that it is not a straight path and that embracing the journey and trusting yourself is so important!

And more recently navigating self-employment, the importance of a strong contract, accounting, marketing, taxes… all of the logistics of owning your own business has definitely been a learning experience!

Please tell us about Hello Luci Creative.
My business, Hello Luci Creative, is a design studio that specializes in creating an authentic online presence for small and creative businesses through branding and website design.

I take a holistic approach to design and really dig into the details of the business before diving into the design elements. I truly believe that it’s important for the business to know its foundations- its mission, vision, audience, its “why”, before creating visuals for it. That’s where we start, and then I use the foundations to tell a story through visuals that truly reflect the business (logo, colors, fonts, images, website, etc.)

I am extremely proud of owning a business that helps others. Not only in creating visuals that will give businesses the confidence to thrive but also in helping my clients take their brand into their own hands. After working together, I provide detailed tutorials and guides for business owners to feel confident in applying their new brand elements and updating their website. My mission, above all is to help others, so they feel inspired and empowered.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I actually don’t think I would do anything differently since it has led me here! I’m sure I have gone back and forth on this in my own mind over the years, but have realized that “should haves” do not help us move forward. (just my personal opinion!)

BUT- if I did have to choose one thing, I would tell myself to trust my intuition! I do believe that our inner voices and gut feelings can really guide us, and wish I would not have fought against it for so long. I am so grateful that I finally listened to myself and took the leap!
