Today we’d like to introduce you to Lourdes Casanova.
Lourdes, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I wanted to be a lawyer for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was known by my family and friends as the kid who loved to argue. I’ve always felt a desire to pursue justice, even when convincing my parents as a child that – whatever the incident – it was my brother’s fault and not mine. Needless to say, law school was a definite path for me. After majoring in English and Spanish at the University of Florida, I continued at UF for another three years to complete the Juris Doctor program. Throughout my legal studies, I focused my attention on criminal law simply because the subject interested me. As an extrovert, I also enjoyed the social aspect of being a criminal lawyer – being in the courtroom every day talking to judges and juries. I began my legal career in 2012 as a prosecutor at the Palm Beach State Attorney’s Office, where I gained invaluable experience in litigation and trial advocacy. Later, I worked for a couple of private firms that practiced a variety of legal issues, including personal injury and immigration. Immigration really resonated with me because of my parents’ background as Cuban refugees. Knowing the struggles and sacrifices my family made to fulfill the American Dream, I felt that I was uniquely equipped to help others in a similar situation. Legal skills aside, true and raw compassion is very necessary for an immigration lawyer to be successful. No amount of school, training or books can teach you this intangible quality. In 2015, with the continued support of family and friends, I decided to open up my own firm. I really wanted my experience and personal knowledge to steer the direction of my clients’ cases. My vision was – and still is – to provide strong, individualized representation for each client. The feeling every client should have from the first meeting forward is confidence.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My firm was certainly not famous overnight. It took a lot of networking and marketing to get my name out there. Once the clients started coming through the door, I had the opportunity to prove myself as an attorney. “Walking the walk” is the most important part of any business; you need to show your customers that you are skilled and fierce in your trade. I have been blessed with clients that are very appreciative of my services and vocal about their positive experiences with Casanova Law. Word of mouth and praise on social media has allowed my business to grow steadily over the last few years.
